Promethia. A latercomer seeks company

I've finally started Promethia. It's been sitting in an organized pile for a long time, while I've been deferring the pleasure.

I'm not a big Alan Moore fan, but I've enjoyed lots of his stuff and felt this was going to special.

It is special. I'm not finding it difficult, and I am finding it beautiful to look at. But the letter column is pissing me off a bit; there's not a lot of explication, and some quite long winded fandom. I might enjoy sharing a wider range of voices.

So I've found a lot of the Moore tropes that I enjoy; the group of women thing he does; the sense of pending madness; the slightly off key superheroics of the
fantastic five....

The sliding between the two worlds thing is something that can irritate, but hasn't so far; and loved the hyperreality episode artwork, even though I always hate photo comics. Except apparently when JHW3 is doing them.
So I'm up to number 9. Next stop, the Sgt Pepper tribute cover. Lush. Now.

one of my favourites by Moore (well, parts anyway).

Enjoy the ride - I think it is the most visually stimulating of his works (maybe Top 10, but that's something else entirely).

I was under the impression that he wrote it for his daughters.

I did enjoy it thank you; And I absolutely see why it should be given to daughters.

Top Ten is probably my favourite Moore. My heart say it is, but my head responds to the elegant tutorial of Promethia. Maybe my head responds to flattery.

The artwork is very varied, except in quality, and seems willfully parodic on occasion.

Probably ought to read it again.

It works well as both a story and an introduction into hermetics.

Around 15 issues of the series are devoted to explanation of concepts with progression of story being secondary. The elements, Tarot, Tantra/Chakras, Sephira, etc.

Of course whether you enjoy the story or not is your bag, but it had me crying tears of awe from the very beginning. Character development was sub par in comparison to his other works and a few plot points felt like they were just thrown in there, despite that it's still a solid tale.

i liked the first book, but that's only what the library has near me. it's solid, and i want to see where it's going.

does anyone else feel like alan moore has abandoned relate-able characters for symbols?

Abandon? Eh, it depends on the story he's writing. Promethea is just to fantastic to relate to, same with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It's not so much his ability to write and develop a character as it is the situations they're placed into.

How are you going to relate to a Constantine goading a swamp elemental into mission as opposed to a vigilante rebelling against society to up hold his skewed values against all odds?

or Superhero police, policing superheroes?

I find his prose on the sludgy side at times, but nevertheless marvel at his capacity for creativity.

I can't imagine how he managed to describe his idea for the final Promethea comic to the artist... yet, he did.
