Holiday rental in London?

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

Ahoy all,

Kali and I are hopping across the pond for my sister's wedding in early October, and hoping to rent an apartment for the week rather than stay at a hotel -- the figgerin' is that we'll save money by shopping for food and cooking instead of being locked into eating out every day.

We'd like to rent a place near the Borough Market if at all possible, but -- in general -- what do you recommend in terms of agencies, services, etc.? I've got a recommendation to check Gumtree, and it seems to be much like CraigsList -- lots of stuff, but very little in the way of making sure you're not getting scammed.

So: apartment, one week, late September, near Borough Market. What neighbourhoods are we looking for? What's a reasonable price? What Gumtree tactics and strategies will keep us from getting ripped off?

Try signing up for Urban75 instead, you'll get a much wider audience with a lot more local knowledge than in this zombie-fest.

I'm guessing you'll find renting a flat for a week quite difficult.

It might be an idea to book early, through a travel agent, and see if they can't cut you a reasonable deal for flight plus central-ish hotel. The alternative, that yourself and Kali spend a week schlepping about the place in increasing states of delrium -

'Where are we? You've got the tube map ... F***ing tube ... What are we doing here?'

is to be avoided, if poss.

Be under no illusions about London; it's a dark city.

Hopefully this isn't a naive suggestion, but what about couchsurfing.com

It would be great if there was a friendly network of such arrangements for people of more, well, alternative tastes.
