Anyone checked this guy out? He's caused major divisions of opinion among my friends, all of whom agree he's something else. What that something is, no-one can agree on.
The Dead Girls/Boys/Things trilogy is just absolutely mindblowing, though I'm not sure I'd ever want to meet the man. It starts kind of Gibson-meets-deSade by way of Stoker & Shakespeare, then gets all decadent and gothic, before becoming a total Maldoror-in-space kind of headfuck.
The later stuff's not quite as brain-crunching, but has some top ideas- The Twist, a Western set in a '50s where we've discovered that when you die, you go to Venus (cos that's where all our Deaths live), and somehow this has become a quest across a late-19th Century which somehow leads to Venus so the West can use their technology in the Cold War... it's kind of fucked, and a lot better than it sounds.
Anyway.
Anyone?
(Personally, I think the guy's fucking brilliant. Disturbing, yes. But the fact that even after three rereadings of the entire "Dead" trilogy I still can't figure out where he's coming from morally makes him an enigma. And that's ALWAYS worth checking out.) |
