This is the stuff of urban myth, I won't make it clickable but it's here

Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.
The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before extracting their fat to sell it for $15,000 (£9,000) a litre.

"You want a job?"
"Yeah, what does it involve?"
"Rendering..."

The thing that got me most about this story (apart from it's echo of Tyler Durden) was the final paragraph in the article;

The gang has been referred to as the Pishtacos, after an ancient Peruvian legend of killers who attack people on lonely roads and murder them for their fat.
HOLY CRAP! That's a fairly specific legend! The pishtaco is a legendary figure in the Peruvian Andean tradition. The word comes from the Quechua pishtay (cut into strips) My headline would have been 'Fiends Follow Fat Filleting Fable' or something, it's like an evil real life scooby doo plot. Horribly fascinating...

AlJazeera reports the same with more gory details!

Yeah, a pishtaco is a fat vampire. I'd... um... heard of them before.

Not the use of human fat in cosmetics, though. I wonder if it appeared in any marketing material. (Shh! There's a secret ingredient! It's only for the special customers, you understand.)

Quants, the word you're looking for is "flensing".

Apparently the reporting is part of the problem, since the pishtaco angle is likely a tactic to terrify the indigenous people who tell pishtaco stories.

The whole tale may be a (yes, I'm going to say it) meme weapon (if you prefer, "psyop") developed to oppress the native peoples.

Hoax: Cops woke up the legend to cover up some killin' of their own:

So, the police officers in question who were anxious to cover up dozens of murders, invoked the myth of a creepy mythical vampire who had a taste for human fat.

And the police officers were quite descriptive. They told reporters that the victims were targeted on remote roads and lured with the promise of a job to a hut in the jungle. The victims were then bludgeoned to death and their heads, arms and legs were cut off, according to the police. Their internal organs were discarded and then candles were placed underneath the bodies to melt the fat, which dripped into containers, presumably plastic coke bottles.

Many questioned the story from the beginning, because there is no market for human body fat. And the organs would be worth millions on the black market, but they were discarded according to the police.

Now, Peru’s police chief has fired General Felix Murga, who apparently engineered the arrests of the four alleged fat killers and taped the fake confession last month. The police chief now believes that only one of the arrested fat killers is guilty of murder. And that the killing is linked to the cocaine trade.

The fat in the coke bottles may have been used as a stunt to intimidate rivals in the drug trade.

Wow- ...perpetrated by police officers to cover up the illegal killings of nearly 50 criminal suspects.

That is some bold lying, blimey.

I'm having real difficulty here, because I agree with you, we aren't just going to get everyone to agree and tow the party line, Christ, I wouldn't want everyone to agree and tow the party line. I just don't think that engaging with extremely obnoxious, policy shirking posters (troll or not) for longer than is necessary is ever a good idea, and that's blinded me to the realities of moderating the board.
