It's been an long road for me and Doris. I've been a fan ever since I was a kid, watching old films during the summer holidays while my brothers were out doing...whatever it was they did.
Despite all the quirks and knocks of fate, all the changes in life that have happened over the years I've remained a fan. Any chance to watch her films has been taken, I've got more of her records than I really have any excure to.
And yet whenever I'ev told anyone this I;ve had one of two responses. "Who?" or "Why?". I'm not sure which is worse.
And then a funny thing happened. Not that funny mind. Don't expect tears of laughter. I was sorting a few boxes of DVDs, working out where to store them when I moved into my partners terraced house. To be honest I was hoping she'd go out for the day, I can get things done faster that way. I passed her a box and, rather than file it away as she should have done, she opened it and rooted. And then she said "Cokey Coley" and pulled out a disc.
Not only did she like Doris, she knew 'Please Don't Eat The Daisies'. I'd made the right decision moving in.
So...you know...any fans? Any favourite films?
I've been watching a few lately. Here, to justify a thread I don't think anyone will be interestedin, are some reactions.
The Daisies remains fresh even though it's really not about anything in particular. The plot is slight, the action sedate but it's Day and Niven. Charm personified.
Glass Bottom Boat? That was a new one to me. For the first time I enjoyed a performance from Dom De Louise and although the attempt at screwball wackiness was a little forced it was fun enough for 90 minures.
Billy Rose's Jumbo isn't quite as magnificemt as it's trying to be. Over the top and rambling it's saved by Day and Durante. It's really Durantes chance to shine and, like the trooper he was, he does. Sentimental, silly, saved by the cahracter moments I doubt it';; ever be on frequent rotation but we enjoyed it for what it was. |
