Sacred Whores

This is one of those split head-shop / temple threads I wish I could somehow double tab without double posting.... but I'm interested in 'The Sacred Whore' as archetype or alternative religious direction (although with a more theoretical base, maybe religion with an anarcho-feminist tinge) and well I figured this place (barbelith) as the only place I would ever receive a sensical reply.

I'm aware of things like Sheela-Na-Gigs atavistic religious iconography leaked over from early Celtic religions, but can anyone tell me anything else? However, I'm not sure what I'm looking for other than something I don't know to be honest.

A good start would be to hunt down "Whores in History: Prositution in Western Society" by Nickie Roberts, which traces prostitution back to the Temples in Mesopotamia as well as "Sex in History" by Reay Tannahill, which has a couple of chapters on the subject.

Sorry: that wasn't a very enlightening reply..."Go read these!".

While I've encountered people online who state they are sacred sex-workers, I sometimes wonder if they are not making lemonade out of lemons, so to speak. It's a tough call and easy to pretend one is a psychologist. I've learned that things aren't always so simple.

From a lot of my readings it seems that a lot of the biblical-era temple Whores were sold into service or "chosen" to serve. It was seen as an honour, but again, I have to wonder how much of that is mere spin. Certainly the whores served a valuable service and were probably well taken care of, at least while in their prime. There are indications that many were able to marry after spending their teenage years in the service of the temple, but I think those may have been exceptions.

Historical accounts are sketchy and it's impossible to tell if the people who wrote the books and histories, the priests and the royal scribes, weren't common (albeit educated) pimps who wrote that the girls gave their bodies in the service of the gods, when in fact they merely brought money into the temple, IMO.

I think your best answer will come from a present day Spiritual Sex-Worker, perhaps an erotic Tantrica, or similar, who can offer a valid insight into your inquiry as opposed to what I've gleaned from some books, as interesting as they were.

There's a hierodule discussion somewhere else on here....

Here, I think.

It also comes up in the "Hieros Gamos" discussion. Marriage to God.
