Anyone else playing this?

Seriously, it's a game that had my name written all over it from the moment it was announced. 4-player online co-op zombie apocalypse fun.

I've only played a couple of online games so far, but it's BEAUTIFUL. And so much more fun when you know your teammates are real people.

The most interesting part is the "AI Director" system, which tailors the amount of zombies, and how they attack, to how the game's been going. Not in a Max Payne kind of "if you're shit, we'll give you fewer baddies" kind of way, but in a "hmm, let's have NO zombies here in the really creepy bit and then, just when you think you're safe, we're gonna SWARM you" sort of way. Haven't been playing long enough to know just how effective that is and how much is marketing, but so far the tension seems to build just when it's needed.

And much as I've always been a fan of a decent storyline, this game has absolutely bugger all beyond what you already know from all the movies, games and comics, yet still manages to be completely immersive. (I guess it's BECAUSE of all the movies, games and comics- once we've established the particular house rules for THIS zombie apocalypse, we know exactly what's going on).

Gameplay-wise it's an FPS stripped to the bare essentials- move, look, shoot (one big gun and a handgun- or two, one explosive, one medikit, one bottle of painkillers- that's all you're carrying when maxed out on inventory), jump, open doors and pick up ammo/weapons/health. That's IT. But what it DOES with that is nothing short of stunning.

As I say, a few plays of single player and a couple of games online mean I'm still overwhelmed by the sheer novelty of it all, and it probably has HUGE flaws I have yet to notice, but right now it's the best game I'm laying.

Are you playing it on the XBox or PC? I ask this for a good reason.

I'm playing it on XBOX 360 and loving it - PM me for my Gamertag, Stoatie!

I'm not on so much at the moment since I started Fallout 3 on the PC, but I'll keep an eye open.

I should also add that I can only think of one flaw, which is that local multiplayer split screen supports only two players.

I usually stay clear from games that are multiplayer focussed, but to ignore this is a shame. I'd love it if 'lithers grouped together in favourite 4-person teams to play this. I've not experienced another game that does such a good job at testing your ability to set aside your ego and work in a group.

Ther are, apparently, glitches that can be abused to make the final chapter of any of the levels significantly easier. I've not put much time into the gme still, but I already feel as though I may be making use of those eventually, if Valve don't patch them up - I *hate* siege gameplay situations with a passion and glitch-abusing is the only way I can see myself getting through them.

It's a shame, becase otherwise I love most everything else that the game does.

I'm guessing you're playing the PC version, Stoatie. If not, where's my frigging friend request?

Coincidentally, glitch-abusing multiplayer sessions on Halo 2 are about as good as I've ever experienced co-operative online gaming get. But that's another thread.

I'm playing PC. Just bought a monstrous quad-core dual graphics card beast, and thought I'd buy it L4D as a present to stop it becoming self-aware and taking over my house.

Strangely, it's "stoatie". I fear change (though, y'know, if you have any spare, etc...)

Seriously, if you even have a vague INKLING you'd like it, I can pretty much guarantee that you'll fucking love it. I bow to no-one in my love of zombies, and this pushes ALL the right buttons*. 'Twould be an honour to get pwned by zombies alongside you.

*Initially I was kind of put off by having the "boss" zombies- the Witch, the Smoker, the Boomer, the Hunter and the Tank, because they seemed like the kind of thing that, in a zombie movie, would break my immersion because they ruin the whole "faceless horde" kind of vibe that makes zombies so overwhelming. But gameplay-wise they're a stroke of genius- they're designed to FORCE you to work together. The Tank CAN be taken down by one player, but... not often. The Witch is pretty easy to kill, but again, on your own it's hard. And the Smoker and Hunter incapacitate players so you HAVE to rescue each other. It's one of those perfect games, where it's so simple, but the things they do with that template are fantastic.

Do it That's a big decision maker for me, having both an XBOX360 and a hulk of a PC.

E - what is this glitch you speak of? I expect there to be a patch on the way if it has such an effect.

And I only just found out that the zombie voices are actually Mike fucking Patton, from the session he did for Portal!

(And I'm pretty sure the witch's song is Jarboe).

Ooh, played Versus mdoe this afternoon, and by crikey that was fun! You get to be the "special" zombies. Being a Hunter or a Smoker is LOTS of fun. Haven't been the Tank yet, but I'd imagine that's pretty cool.

(Being a Boomer is a bit shit, though).

But the set-up took me back to my childhood. The players who are zombies get to go and hide first, then the survivors come out. It's like 40/40 Home, only, y'know, with zombies.

I've just bought it. Having said which, these are infected rather than undead zombies. So, could we not just wait for them all to starve?

Or alternatively, having reached the helicopter, why not just fly to safety, rather than just the next stage of the campaign?

I think the helicopter crashes, but that's only based on reviews.

Glitches: there are places you can position yourself, in the siege sections, where the infected can't reach you. Or so I'm told.

I *hate* siege gameplay situations with a passion

Hmm, that's kind of understandable, but they're pretty much a staple of every zombie movie, so it'd be something of an omission if each map DIDN'T finish with one here. The last reel of any decent Z movie USUALLY has to be the survivors either escaping from, or being killed by, an overwhelming horde ploughing in from everywhere. L4D, I think, justifies the "siege" situation.

Some of the best moments I've had (and it's a game FULL of "moments" and war stories) have been either me, or some or most of my team, dying scant seconds before the boat/helicopter/plane leaves. JUST like all the movies I wanna be in end.

Spatula Clarke
23:03 / 01.02.09
Yeah, I know. I feel a bit daft complaining about it, tbh. It's not even as though I wasn't aware of it when I bought the game.

Truth. One of my favourite moments, watching a friend play online with our other friend (across town via Live). They were standing around while the person I was with went to make a butty, all the enemies in the area killed. Safe right? Just as he applied Flora to bread a swarm of Horde started making their way over a nearby fence. I've never heard him run so fast from the kitchen.

Played a couple hours at work the other day (offline co-op), and was amazed...wanted to get it and play online, but it's seemingly sold-out in this area.

If you see me online NOT playing it, bug me and I'll join in. I'm ashamed to admit that I've only actually played two of the scenarios so there's lots of exploring to do. I purposely save Left 4 Dead for multiplayer with friends only, and that includes all of you

Do you think this is going to come out on PS3 anytime soon?

Spatula Clarke
18:23 / 11.02.09
Valve say no.

I think I'm right in saying that the PS3 port of The Orange Box is markedly inferior to the 360 version and that this is due to the port being handled by an internal EA team, rather than Valve themselves (and was, therefore, subject to the usual issues of being rushed to meet a deadline and/or simply not having as much care taken over it because it was primarily another source of income, rather than a project that the team had any particular attachment to).

So if L4D does eventually come to the PS3 - and it might, because it's another title that EA have handled publishing duties on and it's not at all like EA to pass up any potential source of income on a franchise they have some rights to - that might be something to be wary of.

But Valve say no, so it doesn't really matter right now.

playing it...loving it.

word is an expansion is coming out...was going to be free for PC users, but not for 360. Arguing began, and apparently is will now be free for everyone.

more maps for versus play, and more exciting:

a whole new section of game that's timed, with leaderboards...basically like one of the finales, but with no rescue vehicle. Teams are timed how long they can survive wave after wave after wave...then the best teams can bask in their own green gooey glory.

Yeah, I'm ready for moar maps now!

Though Valve are usually pretty good to the modding community, so I'm expecting some good UGC for this.

Had a proper Day Of The Dead moment earlier- some guy was being a real dick, using his voice chat to yell at everyone and call them bitches, not really getting into the whole co-op thing (you know, helping people, that kind of shit) so we voted to kick him. As soon as the vote thing came up, I realised I'd made something of a mistake in not getting as far away from him as possible. He predictably enough went psycho, and shot me almost to death just as a huge bunch of zombies piled into the room. I got rescued, but it was totally like something out of a movie.

How does one go about playing this on Live with you people? Are there TIMES and DATES to set?

Having to move my one ethernet cable from here to there is preventing me. That, and my house has developed unstable broadband issues...

we should plan a session. no mercy is still the only map i've played all the way through.

You'll get me online most weekends.

Ah, hell. Who am I kidding? You'll get me online every weekend. I'll only fail to respond to an invite if I'm watching a DVD - where I've got notifications turned off - or, currently, if I'm in the middle of a sesh on DoDonPachi DOJ.

I suppose it's largely dependent on whether or not anything's hooked me on a different console, too, but the 360 takes up most of my time, in general.

You're already on my friends list pin, yeah?

I am. I am a number and a name.

I once tried to send you a message asking what were good shmups on Live, only I was using the virtual keyboard and in the end (of my attempt; nowhere near the end of the message I was trying to write) I think I cried a little at how awful it was.

I'm even more into Left 4 Dead now that I have 6 friends regularly playing. Survival mode was fun for a while but to me the game is still all about the versus mode. I've managed to reach gold standard quite easily with some skilled friends, and managed to reach bronze level on the lighthouse map by digging in with the bombs and molotovs inside the corridor.

Left 4 Dead still highly recommended! There's a lot of life in the game, and it suits casual play wonderfully.
