Transatlantic job hunting

After much debate, I put in my application for a UK visa this week, with a tentative move date of June 1st. My visa is ancestral, and therefore I don't need to already have a job to make the move, but it would obviously be better if I already had employment. And I know, I know, the economy and the timing and whatnot is just terrible - suffice it to say this is the best timing for me to go.
So, who's gone looking for work in a place where you can't make it to interviews? Anyone had any luck? I'm an architectural technologist/draftsman/CAD monkey - are there any agencies I should know about?
Help?

Whereabouts are you looking? London, Scotland, Penrith?

England in general. I'd prefer to stay in the southern half of the country, London is the ideal, but I'm pretty flexible - I'll go where there's work.

I'd probably try calling an agency like this one, explain your situation and ask to talk to someone about the possibility of finding work.
