'Tis true.
Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft were penpals, and both were contributors to Weird Tales. Many writers took a crack at the Cthulhu Mythos, including Robert Bloch, August Dereleth, and Clark Ashton Smith. Howard wrote four tales in the Cthulhu Mythos. The Thing on the Roof, Dig Me No Grave, The Fire of Asshurbanipal, and The Black Stone. He also created one of the major tomes of the Mythos, Unaussprechlichen Kulten.
References to the Mythos in Conan's tales are harder to spot. During a dream sequence in Phoenix on the Sword, Conan walks down an aisle lined with images of the Nameless Old Ones. In the King Kull stories, which are set in a time previous to those of Conan's, Kull fought serpent-men who worshipped Yig. Also, in various stories not written by Howard, Yog-Sothoth and Tsathoggua are referenced. It's also generally acknowledged that the sorcery in Howard's tales are in the same vein as the cultists in Lovecraft's work. |
