l can't help wondering if whoever it was that started this thread couldn't, in the future, usefully restrict himself to bothering people at the bus stop, by the school, from now on? Presumably he'd have a reason to be there, outside the school?

The Pastels - Nothing to Be Done

What a tune that is. I used to be a mad Pastels fan. Did my school work-experience as a greasy-haired wee slebber of a lad alongside Stephen Pastel in a painfully hip little record department of John Smith and Son bookshop.

One of their best tunes, from waaaay back in their inception. Not written by Stephen, I don't think, but definitely one where his charming inability to sing really works.

Mama Cass - Dream A Little Dream Of Me is one of the most beautiful songs going in my opinion.

As is Stina Nordenstam's Little Star.

And I'm partial to a bit of Code 4 by, um, Polysics.

And while this isn't exactly pretty, Peach Pie, I keep thinking you should change your name to Peach Pie on the Beach

What's really fun is opening several of the links in different tabs all at the same time.

Or, El Minotaur Blanco.

In any normal film soundtrack,
Gently Johnny would be a contender for its greatest song. But The Wicker Man dropped it, leaving the seduction substory hopelessly mangled. A big shout out to Gary Carpenter for having the foresight to save the soundtrack master copy, thereby ensuring any any of this film's music saw the light of day...

I love a lot of Bob Marley's music but Redemption Song particularly leaves a lump in my throat.

And then, Nitin Sawhney's
Immigrant is a very moving account of his parent's emigration from India to Britain, and some of their emotion surrounding it.

The soaring chorus to VHS or Beta's "Fall Down Lightly" is so lovely it sends chills down my spine, unfortunately none of the YouTube videos I can find seem to be able to do it any justice. This is the only one that even comes close.

Heart's "Dog and Butterfly" made me cry ever since I was a little kid. It's making me cry right now.

I believe that John Lennon-Jealous Guy is one of the most beautiful songs ever written

Yes, very nice... That whole album is very tender. Lennon was being incredibly open on that album, particularly striking in light of his macho behavior for much of his time in the Beatles.

Heart's "Dog and Butterfly" made me cry ever since I was a little kid. It's making me cry right now.

That's a male voice, right? It's incredible!

'Swinging' by Black Box Recorder has the most beautiful mid 8 I've ever heard, complete with elctronic scrambling and saw.

Jellyfish's 'New Mistake' is a much more uplifting tale of a love affair. It's so *cute*.

Um, no, Ann Wilson's a woman; she just has a really rich, velvety singing voice.

Then of course there's the immortal Me and Bobby McGee.

For those days when trading "all my tomorrows for one single yesterday" sounds like a tempting proposition.

Neil Hannon is really amazing... Most great composers still seem to need a period of time to learn the craft, but he appeared to be fully formed at 18. Here is
The Wreck of the Beautiful, his strange and captivating tale of maritime tragedy.

And here is Charmed Life, his wonderful ode to his little girl.

Not only is The Bagman's Gambit a heartbreakingly beautiful song, but it's also a song about secret agents!

i must say, i've been a bit besotted with emiliana torrini's beautiful 'sunny road' for a while now... lilting, simple, poignant and beautiful.

"i've travelled through the deserts on my horse/
but jokes aside, i wanna come back home/
that night, i said i had to go/
you said you'd meet me on the sunny road/

it's time, meet me on the sunny road..."

Broken Social Scene - Anthems for a 17-yr-old Girl

Flaming Lips - Do You Realise?

Mazzy Star - Fade into You

Massive Attack - Teardrop

Yoav - Beautiful Lie

Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Shopuld Have Come Over

Les Cowboys Fringantes - Plus Rien

I would like to recommend Pascale Picard's whole album, "Me, Myself & Us", especially the song "Half Asleep" but I couldn't find a copy so I'll leave you with her song Annoying instead...

I can't find a complete version on YouTube but I'm going to say 'Memorial' by Explosions in the Sky. Also, I believe Stars of the Lid and Their Refinement of the Decline is noteworthy as well.

Stars of the Lid make wonderful late night or early morning music.

Robyn Hitchcock - Glass Hotel

I kind of want to drop this in Lyrics of Your Life '09, but that would be a bit redundant, so close your eyes and imagine me doing that. And you reading it. In your imagination, I am much wittier and prettier, also. Everyone is. Because you're an awesome person like that.

And that song list! Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is "pretty?" You have got to be having a laugh.

Please tell me you're having a laugh.
