Oh, and astrojax i couldn't read vikram seth. tried 'an equal music' but just didn't get into it. I liked "A Suitable Boy", but I really loved "Golden Gate". Though I read it so long ago, I can't exactly trust my younger self's judgment.

"There will definitely be times when you will be bored out of your skull"

Yeah, I think it's ok to skim read all that "..begat x and x begat y and y begat z and z begat..." etc though I guess you need to be paying attention if you're going to use it afterwards to calculate the age of the earth.

Apparently I should read 1984.
No I really should read 1984.

Also the Odyssey and the Aeneid. I have no excuses really.

Don't be hard on yourself, man! You've been very busy. And you've achieved a lot, I'm sure. 1984 is a short book - you can totally nail it.

You mean I'm not a bad person for enjoying science fiction without having read 1984?

I haven't really gotten around to reading the Bible yet. I'm also getting more out of "Ulysses" with every reading, but so far am stranded at "Proteus". Have yet to read Dante's Purgatory and Paradise and... ok, this thread? Not a good idea. At all.

Inferno's the best, hands down. Not that I've read the others, although I believe I own them. I read the Sayers translation of Inferno and it was great.

Never read a word of Proust, just starting Moby Dick and it's great, though I have a weakness for wordy c19 writers ...

Never read Don Quixote.
Never read Ulysses or Finnegans Wake.
Never finished Paradise Lost. I thought there were only 5 books and was gutted to discover, at 4am when I had an essay due on it at 9 the next morning, that this was not the case.
Never killed a man in Reno just to watch him die.

No.

I'm pretty sure that's not it.
