The sm58 is the best option, yeah. It sounds great and it doesn't break. Don't be fooled by the beta range; they do sound a little better, but the feel is all wrong. Only really worth it if your singer is a bit of a vocal acrobat.
What kind of PA you need will depend on what kind of thing you're doing.
I'd suggest you go for a simple powered monitor to start with, one of them, and then build from there. You want to look around, and ask anyone you know who runs a practice studio or a club. they will know what is cheap locally, and they will know of folks getting rid of gear.
You want something like this. Or you could get this one and rarely regret it.
If all you need is a way to be heard over guitars in a garage, all you need is one powered monitor speaker like those above, a microphone, and decent length XLR cable. Remember that if you have a few things(more mics, a drum machine, w'ever) to go through the speaker you will need a way to mix those signals. If you want to do that, you'll need a mixer.
You can get less adaptable stuff if all you need is a preamp for your one mic, but I wouldn't really advise it. You'll soon want more than they offer. Something like this one would allow you to balance your vocal input through the mic inputs, with some spare line inputs for other instruments. |
