I need to buy a PA

So, I found a band! Actually, more like I'm building a band; I got introduced to a rhythm guitarist, found out a guy I know is learning the drums at an alarming rate, and now the guitarist has found a lead guitarist(in true musician fashion, this is a guy he's crashing with right now). So now we just need a bassist. And I need to find a PA.

I figure I can't go wrong going with a Shure SM58 microphone, which is apparently the gold standard for stage mics from everything I've heard. As far as everything else goes, with the speaker and all, I'm a total newbie. I don't even know the difference between a powered monitor and a powered speaker. I'm trying to keep the price under 500 if possible(I can pick up the mic for about 100), and if anybody has any advice they'd offer, I'd love to take it! Thanks in advance, guys!

The sm58 is the best option, yeah. It sounds great and it doesn't break. Don't be fooled by the beta range; they do sound a little better, but the feel is all wrong. Only really worth it if your singer is a bit of a vocal acrobat.

What kind of PA you need will depend on what kind of thing you're doing.

I'd suggest you go for a simple powered monitor to start with, one of them, and then build from there. You want to look around, and ask anyone you know who runs a practice studio or a club. they will know what is cheap locally, and they will know of folks getting rid of gear.

You want something like this. Or you could get this one and rarely regret it.

If all you need is a way to be heard over guitars in a garage, all you need is one powered monitor speaker like those above, a microphone, and decent length XLR cable. Remember that if you have a few things(more mics, a drum machine, w'ever) to go through the speaker you will need a way to mix those signals. If you want to do that, you'll need a mixer.

You can get less adaptable stuff if all you need is a preamp for your one mic, but I wouldn't really advise it. You'll soon want more than they offer. Something like this one would allow you to balance your vocal input through the mic inputs, with some spare line inputs for other instruments.

Yeah, to start all I'll really need is to be able to be heard over the guitars and drums in our practice space, so you think a monitor ought to be fine? Ideally, we'll be getting gigs sooner rather than later, so would it be better to get the monitor, or will that not be useful in a club environment?

Thanks for the suggestions on equipment!

Well, it's useful having your own gear, because some clubs don't have it, or don't have gear that *works*.

But you also have to carry the damn stuff around.

It's cheering me up to realize that this thread follows the "how do I find a band" question. Rock!

Oh, and if it's encouraging, neither the Doors nor the Cramps recorded their best albums with a bass player.

Manzarek played bass parts on organ for the Doors. The Cramps just had Bryan Gregory and/or Kid Congo Powers doing unspeakable things on the guitar.

Y'know, I'd known about the Cramps, but I hadn't known that about the Doors(and funnily enough, I just sent an email before I read this to the rhythm guitarist asking him if he'd like to jam on a couple Doors songs this weekend when we get together. Coincidences, gotta love 'em.)! Interesting. We've said that as much as we'd like a bassist(although Matt and I split on whether or not an upright would be appropriate; I love the sound and I've found one or two people who play that and electric, Matt would prefer an electric), it's not strictly necessary at the moment, especially with two guitars.

I'm glad I could cheer you up with this, grant!

Alright, and part one's complete, I've got the Shure! Found one new at a store for 100 with a rebate, so booyah, now I just need to get a speaker.
