A new translation of Tove Jansson's "The Book About Moomin, Mymble & Little My" has just come out, and it's fucking smart. It's a PROPER children's book- it has holes in the pages to look through and everything! (Snufkin ain't in it, though, but there IS a Fillyjonk, and it's just as spooky/charming as it should be.)

AND Mervyn Peake's "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" has just been reprinted... loads of Peake illustrations, cool little story, AND it's about pirates.

Allegedly, I bought them for my niece for Christmas, but she can fuck off and get her own. Or I might buy another copy of each.

AND THEY EVEN INTERVIEWED THE TRANSLATOR ON RADIO 4'S ARTS PROGRAMME LAST NIGHT! AND READ BITS OF IT OUT AND EVERYTHING!!!

Now that's what I call culture!

That's really interesting.
I was going through a box of books at my store yesterday, and I came across two Tove Jansson books, "Finn Family Moomintroll" and "Tales from Moominvalley". They caught my attention 'cause they have such odd titles. Are they good then? I've been looking for something cool to read to my son at bedtime.

Zoom.

p.s. Anyone looking for a great kid's book must read "The Stinky-Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales" by John Sielkasjdkh....sorry, can't for the life of my spell the dude's last name. But great damn book.

Are they good? Are you kidding?
Of all the books I loved as a kid, they're among the very few that didn't horribly disappoint me when I went back to reread them as an adult. "Finny Family Moomintroll" and "Comet In Moominland" especially. "Tales From Moominvalley" has some really cool stories in, too.
Ah, fuck it. They're all good.
(This post is dedicated to the memory of Tove Jansson... 1914-2001.)

Have any of you read "Kipper and Roly" yet? My wife is the biggest Kipper fan ever (we have to make room for a stuffed toy Kipper in our bed. Which is kinduv endearing, if you're me).

My favourite was always "Dogger" by Shirley Hughes.

quote:Tove Jansson illustrated one of the Alice books (which one I can't remember) too though I have seen her version I can't remember if it ever came out in an English edition.
And she's illustrated Bilbo. Great blob-like Gollum. And really cute hobbits.

No idea if it exists in English. Sorry...

MUST HAVE! MUST FIND! MUST GET!

Jesus! (And when I find it, I won't care what fucking language it's in... I can read the words in English and see the pictures in Finnish... if you see what I mean.)
MORE DETAILS PLEASE!
Fuck that sounds so cool...

I meant The Hobbit of course. Got a bit confused by the Swedish title.

First publication of the version with Jansson's illustrations in 1962. Another printing (14:th) in 1994 at Rabén Prisma in Stockholm.

ISBN: 91-518-2727-1
Title: Bilbo

It's in Swedish. Translation by Britt G Hallqvist.

Don't think it exists in Finnish, but then again you don't really care about that, do you?

I'm afraid it will be a bit hard to come by, but it's worth a try. I've tried to find any images on the Internet, but failed miserably.

Oh, and the Moomin books are written in Swedish. Large Swedish-speaking population in the west of Finland, and Jansson was one of them.
