Best guitar work of 2008

Granted, it's been ages since I don't check on new bands (and another purpose of this thread is maybe to get some sweet recommendations), but I nominate Radiohead's guitars in "15 Step" and "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" (from "In Rainbows") as two basically very *nice* licks from this year.

Which guitar work did you find special in 2008?

Does In Rainbows count as a 2008 album? Radiohead released In Rainbows last october for free on the internet.

I've not heard the album yet but I seen Buddy Guy performing a good few tracks from his new album Skin Deep over the summer and was completely blown away. I caught myself a couple of times wondering where the other guitarist was and then realised it's just Buddy having a drink and keeping the solo going with his left hand only.

I went through my favourites of this year, and most were either published (way before) 2008 or weren´t that guitar oriented.

My pick: Directions to See a Ghost by The Black Angels.

It sounds very retro (Velvet Underground, Stooges) and yet also fresh at the same time. The guitar sound is massive, billowing, bubbling and powerful.

Tracks for a first listen: Deer-Ree-Shee, Never/Ever

this is the best idea for a new thread that I've seen on Barbelith in about...four years. ahem.

shamefully I have purchased almost zero new albums this year. however I did see Made Out of Babies and Boris live and was completely entranced by the guitar work on the new songs they were showcasing. dynomite!

with MOOB I think I loved the bass riffs more than guitar. thick!

on the other hand Boris's lead guitarist with future laser guitar eclipsed the other two.

dang. sorry I can't tell you more about specific songs, but I eagerly await reading more posts.

Wata is a badass. Her album with Ai Aso She's So Heavy is great too, it's only two songs but Wata's is effing sweet. I'll support any decision that proclaims her greatness.

wow, really? I heard lots of advance praise for Wata but was underwhelmed at the show. she seemed to be doing exactly what the lead guy was doing, but a little bit less. she also seemed to have no energy, like she was totally spaced out. kind of cool and dreamy, but not inspiring.

I mean, very cool, very cute, played very well, but seemed little more than backup in that group, on that stage.

I'm sorry to hear about your Wata experience being underwhelming...apparently Michio Kurihara has been added to the roster, haven't heard of him but his stuff on Smile was pretty good.

Not 2008, but the bit around 3:55 where he starts hitting the double notes gets me, as well as the bit around 4:55. Segovia doing "Asturias."

Finally getting around to checking some of the names suggested; will probably post my impressions. So, as I said in the beginning of the thread... I haven't been up to date, I take it this isn't much the time for bands that have the guitar as an upfront quality? I'm thinking, you know, like Television back in the day, and so on.
