Read (and loved) the "Hap & Leonard"s... (except "Savage Season"... what's his other shit like? And what did you think of the "H&L"'s?
gotta go now... picked up "The Bottoms" for a couple of quid, and have to go read a couple of chapters before I sleep.

I've read two of this guy's book .. um .. 'Mucho Mojo' and 'The Two Bear Mambo' I believe.

He's a rip roaring writer - the characters are great, the dialogue's terrific, the pace is sufficiently fast, really funny, interesting approach to social issues and political correctness..

..but i don't think they work well as crime stories because the plotline's are so lame -they're totally obvious scooby doo stories.. I could guess exactly what was going to happen from chapter.2. Really let's the side down.

Read "Freezer Burn". Immediately. This is the best of his books that I've read (mind you I've only read "Bad Chilli" and "Rumble Tumble").

But "Freezer Burn" really is amazing - far more OTT than the Hap and Leonards, and far more moving. It's got a bit more heart to it.

Does it have midgets?

Enjoying "The Bottoms" so far... bit preachy, though, but his heart's in the right place.

Yes. Could someone please explain the end of Freezer Burn as I may be to stupid to get it. And how does the Bottoms compare with the Hap and Leonard stuff? I hear it's very different and comparisons with To Kill a Mockingbird have been made.

I read the two novels set in the Drive-in - for the heart of me I can't remember the titles.
Decided to stay clear of Lansdale for a while - they are a little too twisted for my tastes.
Like Philip K. Dick on drugs....

No, wait
OK, make that "like Sam Raimi on acid" and it's a little better.

Finished "The Bottoms"- that was pretty good, but not as good as the H&Ls.
Now reading "Freezer Burn"- fuck, so far it's incredible! Had to stop reading it last night 'cos it was late and I was keeping people awake laughing. Now they've all gone to work...

Now finished "Freezer Burn"... and there was a point (without giving spoilage) where I stopped laughing and was trying not to cry in public...
yeah...
that WAS better than the Hap'n'Leonards... but only just.
Reminded me of "Wiseblood" (novel, movie, AND band). Not sure if that's a good thing or not...
ALSO reminded me of "The Carny" by Nick Cave... and that's DEFINITELY a good thing.

I cant think of a bad book he's done, seriously. The Hap and Leonard stories are my favourite - a great double act. And I read The Drive In which was a real laugh. His Jonah Hex comics were really funny too but I didn't really get into that Blood and Shadows miniseries he did. It was expensive too.

He has a new (well not quite) short story up every week at his website too: http://www.joerlansdale.com/

Well, I read "Zeppelins West" and got the distinct impression that he'd phoned it in while doing heavy drugs. I was engrossed, then fascinated, then utterly, horribly betrayed. I now consider the time it took to read it lost time, and am lobbying to get it back so that I can redirect it toward something useful, like one of Yarbro's St. Germain novels.

I must admit I think Leonard is one of the best written gay characters I've come across in fiction. I like the way that his sexuality is incidental (as it is with most heterosexual characters in fiction). He just is and that's that, it's quite a refreshing approach.
