So, this week I take a nosedive back into full-time education and head for Manchester.

I've only paid a flying visit before, and was wondering if any lithers could pont me in the direction of any particulary exciting shops / venues / gallerys etc.

Especially keen to get clued up on 2nd hand places:
records, books, clothes etc.

Ta muchly...

Which bit of Manchester are you going to be living in? What course are you taking?

I'm probably not the best person to tell you about the full delights of Manchester as I don't go in to the centre very often but here are the bits I've enjoyed so far...

The Cornerhouse is a lovely independent cinema with a decent bar, a cool bookshop and small galleries upstairs.

Urbis is a big modern gallery in a massive glass/steel creation. Puts on some interesting exhibitions and even the occasional music night.

For second hand stuff you should head to Oldham Street. Oxfam Originals and Pop Boutique are good for vintage clothes, and Vinyl Exchange is a really good second hand record shop. I suspect that there's lots more stuff you'd be interested in near there as the northern quarter is where all the arty stuff is - the smaller clothes shops and galleries.

Well, I'd assume you'd want to head in the direction of Affleck's Palace. It's about 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly Gardens, and it contains pretty much every style of clothing you could hope to buy. It's 4 stories of fun.

What sort of state is Affleck's Palace in? I heard that lots of shops were moving out due to the problems with the lease?

Ta for the replies: I pretty much thought this thread was dying on its arse.

It's a Creative Writing MA at l'University of Manchester. I'll be somewhere on the Victoria Park campus on Hope Road, roughly parallel to the back end of the old campus.

These all sound right up my street.
Much obliged.

Sure I'm lowering the tone moving from gallleries etc to pubs and cafes, but Canal Street AKA The Gay Village is a great night out for all.

And watch out for a brief pit stop between tours of resident progsters Ampilifier; Uni/Academy.

and you'll find loads (apparently most?) of mancs actualy support city!

Knowing what I do about your taste in books, Mick, you will wanna try some of the slightly damp looking smell of-cardboard-boxes-and-dried-spunk type second hand porn shops, as you can get ridiculous sci-fi (Savoy!) bargains. You have to cope with a bit of an ick-factor but you'll turn up some goodies. Just don't take your girlfriend.
