We have a thread for Broken Social Scene, but not for their subset/associates, the lovely Metric. This is a serious oversight.
I listen to this group a great deal, especially 'Live It Out' (2005), their best to date. Since I'm set in my ways as an overage indie fan I'd initially been attracted by the 'female fronted indie band®' element of their appeal, but happily they go some way beyond that... especially lyrically. I can't think of another band I listen to that have such talent for gracefully, elegantly, viciously compacting some of the uglier phenomena of today into little nuggets of beauty. Crypto-misogynist alternative muso boychildren? Wet Blanket. The terrible convenience for men of cultural imperatives designed to make women run scared of ageing/being unattractive? Patriarch on a Vespa. Casual sex as a flagrant distraction from loneliness? Poster of a Girl. All brief, wonderful, affecting songs with the calibre to make you glance nervously over your shoulder in case someone you know sees you for what you are.
Who else on Barbelith admires this fantastic band? |
