I was just in France for quite a long time, and I learned quite a bit about French music. While I am absolutely not an expert on French music, and I am not pretending to be one, I am very fascinated by it. While Serge Gainsbourg, Joe Dassin and Claude Francois are some of the most famous examples of French artists from the past, I am more interested in French hip hop and R&B.

MC Solaar is of course the most famous French rapper, and I find him to be excellent. Not only are his rhymes really good, he makes songs that have meaning. I also was interested by a whole crop of young hip artists who write songs about growing up in the suburbs (which is where I spent my time in France, in the rough northern suburbs of Paris). While a lot of French rap songs are about girls, love and violence-I felt like there were quite a lot of songs about racism, social issues and growing up in tough situations.

These are some of my impressions of French rap music from where I was there, I was wondering what other people thought about French music

resonance fm, londons art radio station used to have an ace french music show at the weekend, i never ceased to be amazed at how good it was and wonder if it is archived somewhere. i suppose i have a soft spot for some of the classic french stuf, aznavour and so on but for me the belgique brel wa my fav francophone singer.

mc solar was a total breath of fresh air to hip hop back in the day though. and have a secret soft spot for that old school french punk single whose name and singer escape me. plastique bertrand perhaps?

So I'm listening to Edith Piaf in the mornings these days, giving Verdi's La Donna est Mobile a bit of a rest. What a voice she's got! It's like being punched.

"and have a secret soft spot for that old school french punk single whose name and singer escape me. plastique bertrand perhaps?"

Plastic Bertrand was the guy who did Ca Plain Pour Moi (probably got the spelling wrong I'm afraid) the kind of silly but brilliant and appropriately plastic punk megahit. That song has a peculiar and convoluted history with all the different versions by different artists. I don't actually know which one came first to be honest. The "controversial" one Jet Boy Jet Girl ran into trouble because the chorus went "he gives me head".
Plastic Bertand also jumped on the new beat bandwagon and had a pretty good stab at it with Dance Dance Dance (I think it was called).
If you like Serge Gainsbourg then Michel Polnaref's album Polnarefs is worth checking out, however I think that my favourite French artist is Jacques Dutronc - who I guess is an older school garage punker who did some absolute killers such as Le Responsable. Similarly, if you can lay your hands on Erick Saint Laurent's Les Temps Y Penses you're in for a treat.

Mickey 3D's 2005 album, Matador was amazing...

I've been into Karkwa, Yann Perrault and Les Cowboys Fringantes recently...

I always have time for Jean Leloup and Groovy Aardvark as well...

Are you counting QuebeƧois music as "French"?
