hey there lovely people of barbelith, i hope you don't mind giving me some advice...

i've seen a few cool-looking chicks and dudes wearing obama shirts, and i'm thinking about buying this one...

now i will definitely be voting for obama come election time and i have been a big fan of some of what he's said so far...but i do know a couple of friends who say that it's not cool to get one of these shirts especially so near to the election... what do you guys think?

The picture's not showing up, but unless it says something like "Obama: truly fucking awful but at least he's not McCain", I'd say no.

I would only wear that shirt if it said "Sponsored by the Committee to Elect John McCain" at the bottom.

When I was a kid, I had a t-shirt with a bunch of the Mr Men around the outside of it, each of them contributing to a big word balloon in the middle that contained the legend:

Do you like my Mr Men t-shirt?

I think you should buy one of them.

What's my problem with him? There's a list as long as a hundred of those delicious liquorice laces joined together, but off the top of my head some of the most glaring problems I have with him would include gallingly uncritical support of Israel, an already-hawkish and increasingly more so foreign policy, and economic and social policies which, by international standards, would place him well on the right side of the political spectrum.

All this puts him firmly in the centre of Democratic Party opinion, but that fact is a damning indictment of the state of mainstream politics in America rather than an endorsement of Obama.

And yeah, you should buy Randy's T-shirt instead. Randy's T-shirt sounds awesome.

Dammit Randy, I frantically googled that to find a picture of it. The one hit I get - your blog. Nuts to everything.

Congratulations on your Psyvariar score btw.

man i really don't see obama as like that but maybe i'm not enough well informed. i thought his position on israel was sympathetic to palestine but supportive of israel's freedom and rights too... and is he really a hawk, he was against the iraq war from the start unlike hillary or "babydaddy" edwards, or mccain who wants to keep us in iraq for 1, 000 years or whatever...

Sure - as I said, he's fairly well in the centre of Democratic opinion. This makes him slightly less bad than Clinton, who's basically a neocon on foreign policy, or McCain, who's just batshit insane, but doesn't make him an attractive option; he's still, for example, aggressively posturing in relation to Iran (albeit not, as Clinton has been, threatening to nuke them) and he still considers a few thousand American lives to be of greater importance than a million plus Iraqis. As for Israel, I'd be suspicious of anyone talking about balance between both sides as though it was a situation with equal blame on all sides, but Obama doesn't even go that far; he's still talking about ensuring Jerusalem "remains" the undivided capital of Israel, and sent surrogates to - I forget where, the UN? - to make sure Israel was not criticised for its arguably-genocidal blockade of the Gaza strip.

A guy at work has one, and seriously, he's had to install a new security system, buy some curtains and get a dog just to protect himself from all the sexual overtures he's being inundated with.

Personally I think the green looks a bit insipid.

Where can I get one of those tees? it's the knuckleduster letters that make it really, although for realism I'd like the letters reversed so when you smack someone in the face it leaves an OBAMA logo imprinted in the wound.

WS, you should get this tee-

or this one-

If you like it get it. If you think it's cool, camp or kitsch (and one day it will be...) Get it. As a collectors item never to be worn, and then sold on ebay in 10-12 years (if ebay still exists) get it.

Doesn't make sense to me, though: Why does Obama want you to knock me out? (I knever knew why Mama did, either...)What did I do to either of you?

On a quasi serious note: Why do you feel the need to advertise your political affiliation? Do you want to wear the shirt to show that you support Obama, or because you think it's cool, or a bit of both?

At the risk of being very, very crass and flip, Obama vs McCain seems almost like the choice between Coke and Pepsi to me.
