So I've just been to the first anniversary party of the Glasgow group and had a thoroughly entertaining time - 10 pounds for close to 8 hours of life drawing, burlesque appreciation and general carousing.

I'd imagine it would be right up the alleys of several of you but can't find a mention via the search function.

Anyone here been at one of the 60 groups spread around the globe?

And, at the risk of earning a move to creation, here's one of my sketches from Sunday's show.

I went to one in Minneapolis last month. It wasn't great for me, but I think that had more to do with a)a very bad choice in my part of sitting on a barstool instead of opting for a booth with more space and b)the woman behind me who seemed intent on knocking me OFF my barstool every time I started to really concentrate on my work.

I'm also absolutely NOT a visual artist and my drawing skills are fifth grade level. I had gotten the incorrect impression that there was an instructional portion of the event; if there is one, it sure didn't happen where I am. I think it's a wonderful concept, but the contest-driven nature of the one I attended made it a turnoff for me.

I think that's the problem with a franchise like this - there seems to be a bit of inconsistency about how they're run. The Glasgow one is purely done for fun - any competitions are done as a laugh and non-compulsory.

Frequently too, the winners of said comps are not the best sketches, but the funniest ideas.

The operator of the Brighton Sketchy's was there on the night and she didn't quite seem to have the ethos worked out either - awarding prizes for "best worst attempt" as voted for by the participants seemed condescending at best.

Glasgow seems to be the biggest group simply because it has the best idea of how it should be run - I went with a physicist and my girlfriend who studied English Lit. I'm the only trained artist but all three of us were able to get equal amounts of satisfaction from the work we produced. I think the teaching aspect you expected would be alright if people wanted to be taught, but most just want to develop their own stuff.
