I think that's the problem with a franchise like this - there seems to be a bit of inconsistency about how they're run. The Glasgow one is purely done for fun - any competitions are done as a laugh and non-compulsory.
Frequently too, the winners of said comps are not the best sketches, but the funniest ideas.
The operator of the Brighton Sketchy's was there on the night and she didn't quite seem to have the ethos worked out either - awarding prizes for "best worst attempt" as voted for by the participants seemed condescending at best.
Glasgow seems to be the biggest group simply because it has the best idea of how it should be run - I went with a physicist and my girlfriend who studied English Lit. I'm the only trained artist but all three of us were able to get equal amounts of satisfaction from the work we produced. I think the teaching aspect you expected would be alright if people wanted to be taught, but most just want to develop their own stuff. |
