So soon I'm going to have, for the first time in my life, more than one room.

I'm going to have two rooms.

I've always had everything in one room up until now, because I had no choice; but now I've got two, I'd love to hear your advice on what to put in which room!

One of them will be where the bed is and the other will be where the 'office' is.

What kind of things would you put in the room where the bed is, and what sort of things would you put in the 'office'?

this may sound odd, but minimalism helps me relax so for me, I would put the bed in the bedroom and only the bed. Really, as little else as possible would go in. I once had a small second room which had a futon, a rug and an ashtray in it. Later a tv and vcr were added, but that was as busy as it got. Peace, perfect peace. Compared with the bombed-out charity shop i live in now it was a joy. Not getting stressed by my domestic space is something i'm currently failing at.

Same here -- the office is where all the gear is -- books, computer, etc. The bedroom has the bed, clothes, and speakers/iPod (but the CDs etc. are elsewhere). A work space and a rest space.

Evolution, stuff will end up where it needs to be.

We moved into a two floors, attic, greenhouse, coal bunker and shed set-up. Things are still making their way around the place at a frightening rate and I anticipate at least another six months before the traffic settles down.

A tv free room would be a preference for me, or in my case a few old tv's not plugged in with stuff piled on them.

I'm cultivating my zen amid the chaos.

I like your thinking Proinsias, I'm similar. I tend to allow things to remain in the same room that I've just used them in, and just try and put them somewhere that's somewhat tidy. It's a bit lazy but I'm hoping that I'll eventually hit a kind of organisational nirvana where everything is immediately at hand at the exact point at which I need it.

I'm very jealous of anyone having two rooms to themselves. I'd also advise trying to have just a bed and clothes and possibly a bookcase in the bedroom. Once you get into the habit of only really using the bedroom for sleep it becomes a lot easier to sleep well. Have you got a lot of other stuff (other than a computer) that you'd need to put in your office?

In that situation myself. I have this old TV that my mom wanted me to keep for her for when she moves back to KY, and I keep begging her to let me take it to Goodwill, but she won't let me get rid of it. She keeps telling me to put it in my bedroom, but I don't WANT a TV in the bedroom.

I'm looking at this thing taking up valuable real estate on a chair in my living room, and I'm filling up with headsick and rage just thinking about it.

Never store anybody else's crap unless it's something you can actually use.

Goodwill. It's easier to get forgiveness than permission. They say.

Yes, get rid of the tv, Liger. Give your mother four weeks to decide. When she doesn´t say "give me my tv back", give that thing to someone else. Why should other people´s unwanted belongings clog up your living space? You did the nice thing by having that tv; that doesn´t mean, your mother can use your flat as her private storage unit.
