Let's suggest rooms that are available in late August/early September that are within 30mins of UCL and the Strand at around £450-500pcm.

With the related discussions:

- Is the above possible? (I pay, um... suboptimal levels of attention to the area)

- Why does everyone in London want me to move in tomorrow?

- Why do I still have loads of crap I don't really want to get rid of, but would be hard-pressed to really be able to say that I need?

- Is Whisky Priestess still going to slap me down for not providing enough information?

- anything's possible, whether it's likely or not is another matter. London rents are ridiculous generally and yet i've been thrice lucky in having quite cheap rents. I will keep my ears open anyway - word of mouth is by far the best way of finding the better deals. Not being funny but you might also want to think about squatting, what with costs being what they are and you still being young and adventurous.

- because we have been waiting sssssssooo long for you to come to ussssss.

- one of this society's strange and surreal byproducts is stuff which we don't need but couldn't do without. Ruthless decluttering is the only way, I suspect, but I wouldn't know, my flat's like a charity shop after a bomb's hit it.

- It'll help if you specify whether that's 30 min's walk or 30 min's journey on public transport, because it'll make a significant difference. So yes, I assume that Whiskey will slap you down for unspecificity, but also that you'll love it really.

But if you're coming to study, isn't your college accomodation office supposed to sort this out for you?

I'm here already, and working (off the Strand), and about to start studying part-time.

That's a half hour public transport deal.

I'm really not very adventurous, but it was sweet of you to say.

Anywhere in Zone two within 5-10 minutes of a tube or bus station would probably do it. That is, apart from the NE (Stokey, Hackney etc), and parts of the SE (Peckham, east Camberwell, New Cross).

Actually, New Cross would be quite a pleasant 15-20 minute overland journey to Charing Cross via London Bridge. The virtues of travel above ground are often neglected, but in hot weather it's a far superior method.

You might get a bit stabbed, mind. It's handy for lots of Barbeloids, as well, but that may not be a good thing.

I didn't knew that (about overground travel, if I'm being honest), but I didn't know about London Underground weird oversight no-station areas. I just felt giving a time-limit was easier than a list.

I don't think seeing Barbeloids would be a problem, either. An interesting change of pace, in fact, in comparison.

Ah yes, the overland. I keep forgetting about that. Can you use Oyster PAYG on it yet?

I think not (yet).

Isn't East London supposed to be the next Cool Place To Be(TM)? I think one should always aim for the next Cool Place To Be(TM) if at all possible. (And I say that only slightly flippantly.)

I think you can get stabbed pretty much anywhere in London these days.

East London was the cool place to be a few years ago, I think... it may still be so, cool having rather passed me by.

Oyster PAYG - being put in now in overland stations. Really, though, your employer should sort you out with a travelcard loan.

They still speak of East London as being cool. Though this only raises the problem of whether somewhere has ceased to be cool by the time it's got a reputation for being cool, I suppose.

Btw Pin I somehow had no idea you were already here. But forget all that nonsense I posted above about dirty squats full of rabid anarchists, you don't wanna do that. I have now decided that by far the cunningest way to live in London is on a boat of some sort and now unreservedly recommend you try this. This is based on no more solid evidence than saturday night's splendid booze up at a well-known London cruising club. (That's a land-based club where people who live on boats hang out, btw, before anyone makes childish innuendo. The boats were really very homely in a slightly Wind In The Willows sort of a way. And very cheap.)

On an incidental note, tonight I am going to New Cross. I may be some time.

Whole year now, actually (almost).

Surely the boat would sink, like weekly? That seems like the kind of ratio it would be reasonable to worry about...

Gumtree has listings. I recommend you take a look at some property prices and then use TFL's journeyplanner to check out the commute.

New Cross was kind to me and I lived to tell the tale.

Re: sinkage, only one person I know had that problem and it was his fault for having too much weight badly distributed on board. Unless you are a blithering idiot it's really nothing to worry about.
