Hello Everybody!
Thirtytwoyearold male born and bred in Norway enters stage right.
My brother says I'm a working-class hero, but then he's a philosopher... I say I'm a lot of a lot; massage-therapist, fight-coreographer, personal trainer, student of medicine, nlp and magick. Father&Son. English is not my native tongue; some puns and jokes pass right over my head, so don't be alarmed if I don't respond to such accordingly. Other than that I'll be a respectful, decent persona when encountered in the forum, as I am here for information and new perspectives. Thank you.

Hi SBN-1,
How's Norway this time of year?

Bonjour. The economy is strong, the people high on anti-depressants, the weather is cold and wet, and I am all good! Thanks for asking. Ca roule! Et toi?

Ça va bien au Québec... The summer has kicked in after a long rainy June, the economy is in decline, I'm pleased that gas prices are rising which will force people to think more about their habits, and Sun, Love and certain varieties of Herbs are better than anti-depressants.

I was always led to believe (Through magazines and articles) that the quality of life in Norway and indeed all of Scandanavia is quite high. The land is also very beautiful from pictures I've seen. I really hope to visit the day that I accumulate what could be considered Disposable Income. Do you travel much?

May the Sun do you all kinds of good. And had the good herb been offered instead of prozac things might have been different.
Because of the incredible amount of money people have in this country they are not driving less even with gas prices at 12CAD per gallon. Thing is that oil and relative peace for 50 years has led to a national coma in which grown-ups are occupied with renovating their kitchens and bathrooms, and kids with cutting or killing themselves. What the hipsters are doing I don't know but I think it involves media manipulation or something. And then there is a small amount of religious romantics like me who are trying to create a space where we can exist without being compromised too much. Actually I am very optimistic and cheerful about the whole thing, and I'm generally having fun all the time.
But you are right about norway being a beautiful land - I have traveled all over and wept in amazement of the wonders of creation. Yes I do travel a bit - have been all over Europe, in the Middle East, southern Africa, and west USA. Never been to Canada though, but I wrote a school paper about it once! Guess there is a certain affinity between the northern areas, and I used to live in a tipi and dream about going camping in Canada. I love Daniel Lanois by the way.

I'd mention there's an Introductions thread, but fuck it, these are End Times. Welcome! Tell us a bit about your travels. What was your favorite place to visit? Is there any place you'd like to visit again?

Oops, sorry about that.
I don't know what you mean by End Times, but it's probably good.
My favourite travel experience was being attacked by lions in the Kalahari desert. Very sobering.
Nice to meet you brb.

End Times probably is a reference to the fact this place is supposed to be dying. Though it might be a reference to the fact the fuel shortages will probably lead to an apocalypse which will destroy all those not mobile enough to scavenge or brutal enough to pillage. It will be a white line nightmare, and anyone could easily loose everything in the roar of an engine. But sorry, I digress.

Er yep, welcome on board.

P.S. I too am curious about the lion thing... what does one do in such a situation? Play dead or didja get all martial arts on 'em?

I think thyme is seriously underrated! I know that every time I go to the pump, I start thinking thyme, and how a bit of it goes so well with a roast. Cheers me right up, makes it like all those years of abuse never happened.

Here's a soup recipe that uses both thyme and leftover veggies -- it's an antidepressant that also saves the planet:

I know it seems counterintuitive, but horseradish is actually an excellent analgesic.

Sometimes, a fresh WELCOME thread must grow from the dank and merciless soil, darlings. Welcome! Remember, please, that respect is a key ingredient in a hearty Barbelationship. Post away!

Have you seen a film called The Bothersome Man (Den Brysomme Mannen)? It's a Norwegian film where the director (Jens Lien) seems to be launching a direct attack on the culture you're bemoaning here - it's filled with empty people obsessed with home improvements and there are a few attempted suicides.

To all asking about the lions: me and my friend (an old ranger) were driving all over the Kalahari for three weeks and had several encounters with lions; the rain had been plenty and so were the game, so lots of lions too.
We were in the Khutse game reserve when we spotted a waterhole on the map and went there in the late afternoon to get lucky. We sat on the roof of the old Toyota watching the sunset when we heard those grunts that lions make to warn the desert that they are coming to have a party. After a while we spotted four queens lying 500m away, as if trying to attract attention. Knowing how clever they are we started checking out the surrounding bushes for "spies" and saw a couple lurching in the grass. Looking back at the queens they had gone and been replaced by some males. After 15min of this game we knew we were surrounded but didn't feel very unsafe. Suddenly I saw two queens crouching in the grass 100m from me, creeping towards me with their eyes fixed on my ass. I told my friend but he was busy looking at the others in his binocs. When I looked back at them they where 30m away and now I recognized the look I'd seen on lions hunting on TV, so I told him again to check them out (at this time I was on the ground, he was on the roof). He did - and told me to get the hell into the car as he jumped down on the other side. The second we closed the doors the lions were there: two inches from me on the other side of the window. Seconds later we were surrounded by 17 lions having a party around our car. The king was huge with black hair, lying in front of us. It was crazy, as they came up to the window, licking the tires, running around jumping up to 4m tall trees and finally gave a concert of roaring that made the whole car shake like a vibrator.
At that point some SouthAfrican kids came driving to us palefaced and shaking. They had just been chased out of their camp as the lions had trashed everything they had, and the asked us to escort them out of there. On the way to our camp 1,5km away we met another 10 lions blocking the way, but we managed to scare them off the track. We offered the kids to stay in our camp but they were too scared and drove off, and we went to bed with the pack "singing" us to sleep and woke up to a beautiful rainbow arching the sky.
Later we had more encounters with lions in our camp and all, but by then my senses had climbed to a high level of awareness preventing me from doing stupid things. We didn't bring guns, only knives and torches, and I believe that was a good thing. Nothing as dangerous as false security.

I went to Oslo last year. I went to the Edvard Munch museum, and had to go for a walk in the botanical gardens afterwards to cheer myself up. Edvard Munch was not a happy man, bless him. I also went to the Vigeland Sculpture Museum, which was fab. Much better than the Vigeland Sculpture Park, which is a bit too straight-lined and municipal given the nature of the pieces.

If I can work out how to post pics, I'll add them later.

But welcome! I'm Jenna Elfman. I was in Dharma and Greg and the Ben Stiller/Edward Norton flick Keeping the Faith.
