They´re opening up the new embassy here today, with George Bush´s old man being the most prominent guest along with Kissinger. That´s going to be a big securityfest this evening. But still, maybe there´ll be some fireworks?

And Jonathan Franzen has been visiting the embassy and according to him it looks like a small town motel. I think it looks as bland as all the other high profile buildings in that area.

Here´s Bush getting his Kissinger prize yesterday.

Happy Indie Day.

Aww, Johnathan Franzen.

For a moment I thought Johnathan Frakes.

Nothing makes a party like an ex-Trek.

You mean that Slim's trolling? Now I gotta peel the "I *heart* Rev. Wright" sticker off of my bumper...

Obviously it's bait, but I can't help but be... well, pretty annoyed as to how it's set up. I mean, Slim actually *is* someone with a history of being a bit of a cheerleader for US foreign policy, so it seems like this way he gets to make irritating proclamations about the US' greatness, but also to claim to any ol' lefties that object to it that he's just being ironic.

Well, yes. Obviously. It's genuinely not worth commenting on. It's like saying "God, the capacity of this rain to dampen my clothing is infuriating".

Instead, I'm going to celebrate the contributions of the US to the world. The Wire! Pizza Pie! Stephin Merritt!

I have absolutely no problem with Americans in general. I do despise that phrase though... PM Harper has been using it here in Canada and I despise that too...
Just touchy today. I found out that I'll be missing Feist tonight...

Pizza pie was invented in Italy, just like normal pizza. Apple pie isn't originally American either. Therefore the US has only two achievements.

Trollery?

Here, on Barbelith, pertaining to the dear old U. S. of A.?

Oh.

I'll reign in "the Ulcerated Sphincter of Arserica" rant then and just say, can we not forget my dear departed namesake, William 'Bill' Burroughs? Ta.

Oh and Arnold from 'Diff'rent Strokes' too, of course.

Jack Kerouac collaborated with Burroughs too, and he was Canadian IIRC.

I'd better mention Ginsberg too so he doesn't feel left out (he helped Burroughs a fair bit as well).

But little Arnold has to be the apex of American civilisation, no?

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

God bless Lee Greenwood!

A couple of months ago I went to Las Vegas.

Our taxi pulled up in front of the Bellagio just in time for the water show, where the fountains spurted and lights flashed in perfect synch with "Proud to be an American."

The crowd went wild.

I am a real American, Fight for the rights of every man,
I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!

When it comes crashing down, and it hurts inside,
ya' gotta take a stand, it don't help to hide,
Well, you hurt my friends, and you hurt my pride,
I gotta be a man; I can't let it slide,
I am a real American, Fight for the rights of every man,
I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!

I feel strong about right and wrong,
And I don't take trouble for very long,
I got something deep inside of me, and courage is the thing that keeps us free,
I am a real American, Fight for the rights of every man,
I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!

Well you hurt my friends, and you hurt my pride,
I gotta be a man; I can't let it slide,
I am a real American, Fight for the rights of every man,
I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!
I am a real American, Fight for the rights of every man,
I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!

Back in the days when the battles raged,
And we thought it was nothing
A bookstore man meets the CIA,
And we know.
Throw me a cord and plug it in,
Get the cradle rocking
Out with the redneck pig old men,
And its go.

The hair in the hole in my head.
Too bad the scene is dead.
Memories in the shadow
Back in time again.

Ah, I cant forget your terrorized face,
When you cried for the shameless.
Wasted life Ameri-K-K-Kan,
And you smile.
So why should we run when we cannot hide,
And my flag is burning?
We could be wrong but thats all right,
Well rise again.

The hair in the hole in my head.
Too bad the scene is dead.
Memories in the shadow
Its back in town again.

Lookin away its another day,
And of course we love you.
Radical man is the CIA,
And we say no.
Well round up the durham h.c. kids,
And the char grill killers.
Jesse H. come into our pit,
All-Ages show.

The hair in the hole in my head.
Too bad the scene is dead.
Memories in the shadow
Its back in time again.
