Zuda - DC's webcomic label

instead of opening a new thread for every comic i like and would like to recommend, so it's better to have only one for DC's webcomic label and we can discuss each month's competition.

http://zudacomics.com/

for those new to it, Zuda opened on November 2007 and offers every month the 8 first pages of 10 new webcomics - readers vote for the one they liked best [and only one vote; the ranking system confused me at first]. pages must be in landscape format to be displayed in their flash player which can be blown to full screen mode.

anyone can submit their work and if it gets approved can [must] promote it on the web to get votes. some of the competitors have had their stories continued elsewhere, in sites like Act-I-vate.

the winner comic of the month is serialized at Zuda and authors get an interesting page rate, in exchange for giving DC part of the rights. some have criticised this, while others view it as a necessary sacrifice to get their break.

Zuda's not perfect - for me the worst bits are the landscape format [kind of prevents sending rejected pitches elsewhere] and having collections of strips compete against incomplete stories - but it's one of the best websites of its kind today.

for readers it's new free comics each month, which is cool. i found real pleasure [and sometimes pain] in discovering new stories in several genres. so far DC has a stepped in this webcomics thing with their right foot.

last week of the June competition begins with CURSED PLANET [my favourite of the month] still at the top position. if it wins, i suppose it'll be the first time a comic stays that long at the first spot.

this month's competition is the Zuda Invitational, in which several of previous competitors show further pages of their stories and are given a second change for the top spot by fighting each other for the readers' vote.

Dean Haspiel's "Street Code" is some good stuff; if you like NYC-autobio stuff (similar to some of Haspiel's other work, style- and topic-wise). I'd recommend checking it out.
