The Apocalipstix Vol. 1

21:29 / 11.06.08
After literally years of development, the first full-length volume of The Apocalipstix is ready to debut at the San Diego Comicon next month, and will be available in stores shortly after.

When bandmates Mandy, Meg and Dot's rise to stardom is abruptly cut short by full-scale nuclear holocaust, they strap on their instruments, load up the van, and go on tour across the radioactive wasteland to bring rock to the ruins. Along the way they run afoul of a band of road pirates, have a picnic overrun by giant irradiated ants, and compete in an earth-shaking Battle of the Bands for the ultimate prize - enough fuel and ammunition to take them to California, where, legend has it, there's still green grass and blue skies...

CBR has the first article and tomorrow there will be an exclusive 50-page(!) preview of the book. Check it out and let us know what you think...

Huh. I just tried to get road pirates in an upcoming Weekly World News story, but they got nixed.

Too grim, the boss said.

I'll have to get the comic instead, somehow.

50 pages, and that's just the PREVIEW?? Wow. Congrats, Cam - I'll have to check this out (and see how long the actual thing is). Cheers.

The book clocks in at 152 pages, so there's still 2/3rds of it left to read after the preview. I was initially hesitant about having 50 pages put up for free but the marketing peeps at Oni assure me that sales actually increase after long previews.

Hope you like it!

The King is totally going to be played by Lemmy in the movie, isn't he.

Hahaha! It's sort of a cross between Lemmy and Nick Cave.

Did I read some of Apocalipstix in a Free Comics Day collection a few years ago. The name and style seems awfully familiar.

So you didn't read the article or watch the video, then.

Yes, there were a couple of Apocalipstix shorts that have appeared in past Toronto Comics Festival FCBD anthologies. This new book is all-new material, however.

Ray Fawkes also has a new collaboration with vetran artist Vince Locke to be published by Top Shelf sometime in 2009...

sleazenation: that'd be Junction True - Vince Locke is painting every single page, and it's gonna be crazy-gorgeous.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
15:14 / 24.07.08
I picked it up yesterday and I'm only about a chapter and a half in, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I love the energy, both in story and art -- and I'm still getting a handle on the characters.

...and I just finished it! Man, now I'm totally looking forward to Volume 2. When's Volume 2 coming out? The girls are fun and the comic has a lot of wild energy about it. Some things felt a little underdeveloped -- the rival band, for example, could have used a bit more space -- but I'm hoping that as you guys rev up into the second volume the world will expand with more detail.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Good review. I'm beginning to wonder if there's something in the water with all the super-rockers running 'round in comics right now. O, Josie: what have ye begat?

You hit upon the thing that initially bothered me but ultimately won me over -- it's not dense, even though it's smart and fun. It's straightforward, and pop-tastic. The girls didn't spend their time in some kind of weird chamber, sitting 'round a table and discussing new bandmembers. They did shit, they had fun, they had adventures.

"Sick Picnic" stands out for me as the most perfectly realized episode (and yeah, I love that it's so episodic rather than trying to be epic).

It made me want to find out WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, rather desperately, so it wins on that count -- though, the end of this one is pretty abrupt.

Thanks guys, we're so glad that you're digging what we've done. Ray and I just returned home from the whirlwind San Diego Comicon and the book appeared to be a big success at the show, with Oni Press selling out of their stock entirely. Hopefully that buzz carries over to comic shops.

You and Ray might enjoy this short-short story. It seems relevant.
