There's an interesting sounding documentary on DH Lawrence tonight on Radio 3. Specifially it's about his aborted stay in Cornwall during which his shocking city ways led to the natives forcing him out.

I've got the house to myself tonight so I can indulge without fear of scorn or worse a nagging chorus of 'This is boooooring. Give me the remote'. Could be worth an hour of your time. Equally as much it might not.

I hadn't heard about this. It's kind of an opposite story to his falling out with the Cambridge set, isn't it? They thought he was too much of a 'country man' (obviously not in those words, I'm paraphrasing from several sources).

In a way, yes. He was so enamoured of Cornwall that he tried to persuade friends to move near and start a community there, one that was closer to nature. That didn't work and his eccentricities and German wife caused offence during war time. It looks like the local vicar had a lot to do with his being reported to the authorities.
