Does this picture make you angry?

Winemouse?

Whether it's Heather Mills or Kerry Katona, the celebrities that ordinary people vilify seem disproportionately to be female. Why?

"We are missing a big part of the picture if we think misogyny is the exclusive preserve of men," says Ms Negra.

"There has been a conspicuous trend in the last five years towards the production of negatively-valued women in the public sphere. People respond to the pleasures of hating these kinds of figures."

"There is incredible ambivalence in a post-feminist culture towards women in the public sphere."

Is this true, false, or, completely old news?

Damn, I can't see the Heather Mills picture. But the Winehouse/Doherty YouTube made me constantly afraid for the safety of the baby mice. (Spoiler: they survive).

It's an interesting topic but pretty old news, I think - though deserving of analysis. Interesting to contrast someone like Jordan (who's generally positively viewed these days, IMHO) as the "good" working-class celebrity mum -in a stable relationship, apparently in control of her life and her business - with Katona/Britney who are often represented by the tabs as the "bad" version, one who cannot take proper care of herself or her children, despite starting from a similar point.

Yeah, the way the media treat figures like Amy Winehouse is pretty horrible. I suppose we all love to gossip, but it's a dangerous point when the gossips start to claim moral authority ...

I live only twenty minutes by foot from UEA, my old alma mata (go Pirates!), so I could attend the conference and report back (maybe even sneak my mp3 recorder in and let you all have a listen).

Can't baby mice get scent contamination from human contact when they're that young and then get eaten by their mother? Or something...

Though Stoatie certainly makes a persuasive argument, I'm afraid that according to UEA's website the deadline for registration was the 1st of May. Bummer.

I've had a few rants on this subject in the past, particularly with regard to Winehouse. The observer effect, that scrutinising anything changes it, applies here. Although the singer was perhaps a damaged individual prior to becoming a public individual, there has clearly been a deterioration and how much of this is due to the attention she gets in the media? I don't know about anyone else but if I was in her position, I would most likely go loco too.

So any time someone points out some new development in her ongoing saga, "Oh no, poor Amy's back on the crack, she should really sort herself out..", I'm inclined to say no, maybe its us that should sort ourselves out and give "poor Amy" a bit of privacy to get her shit together.

Then again, I don't follow celebrity news myself, and much like the tabloid press themselves, I only see the crescent; only herself sees the whole of the moon.

On another note, big up yourself fellow Norwich Barbeloids!
