The DFC

Surely good news that there's a brand new comic book for children being launched here in the UK. Called "The DFC", it's initially subscription only and features creators like Philip Pullman (yes that one), Nick Abadzis and Woodrow Phoenix.

With comics' appeal long since waning with the kids of this country, this is a welcome development and if it's as good as the preview pages on the website suggest, we can only hope it does well and enthuses a new generation of readers in the joys of sequential narrative storytelling.

With my two-year-old already pawing my collection, and in the light of his fully mature Spiderman obsession, I might well give this a look.

heard pullman on radio 4 talking about it, and it kind of put me off - talking about the eagle, jumpers for goalposts etc. it just seems too cosy, too fifties. it makes me think of that ghastly mid-ground guardian comic supplement they have on saturdays - which i know i would have hated when i was wee. where's pat mills when you need him? so to be honest, i'm only cautiously interested. i think it'll probably be killed by the subscription thing - it's just not going to have the pester power behind it until it's in the newsagents, but how's it going to get there without customers in the first place? seems doomed by its own good intentions. and poor business model. i mean, i'm not going to subscribe, as the dependant is a year or two off yet, and if i'm not, who is? (well, boboss apparently, which is good)

all that said - the strips look okay. nicely produced, a good mix of slick/serious and garish/silly not attempted since the excellent, overlooked 'buster', as far as i remember. is buster becoming a hip slagging word again? i seem to have heard it a bit lately...

Umm.. that would be because it's the same stuff, I guess. When I was a kid, quality meant nothing. Sure, I preferred IPC to DC Thomson (good god The Dandy was dull), but if it had word balloons, I'd read it, and for many years dreaded no words more than "Great new for all our readers inside!".
There really are no decent kids' comics any more apart from the Beano and, to a certain extent, the Doctor Who one, as Dandy is a whizzy magazine-style thing and I'm pretty sure all the old IPC/Fleetway stuff disappeared years ago.
My mum has recently been encouranging some kids of friends to read comics (she noticed the fact that I taught myself to read with them) and if this is any good, she'll probably be buying gift subscriptions.
The Guardian stuff has been a bit low-grade so far (and full of printing screw-ups), but its heart seem to be in the right place (the dog detectives and the Nick Abadzis ones wern't bad) I'm sure it'll improve as it finds its feet.
Look, any comic featuring Woodrow Phoenix deserves your money, basically.

really? like exactly the same stuff? I gave up on the guardian bit after a couple of weeks, so wouldn't really know. that's interesting though, so is the guardian group directly involved in dfc? as in, not for profit etc.?

regarding what's in the shops - i always like the look of panini's spidey comic, always lots of crash bang wallop, very few references to marital strife or aunt may's hernia, which has to be encouraged. i've come close to buying it a few times, but always go for a wildlife magazine or the cbeebies rag instead. i will soon though.

does reading woodrow phoenix comics make beer-bellies diappear? that would be really handy.

you should check out Woodrow and Ian Carney's amazing "Sugar Buzz" from a few years ago (published by Slave Labor I think) for what a kids comic should be. One of my faves

In truth, the comic's business model has quite a lot going for it. Random House are coughing up the funding, so it's not like the DFC needs to land with a mighty bang and sell 100,000 copies an issue in it's first few weeks. They're happy to build up it's readership gradually.

Me, I've got a pitch of my own on the go... and finding a possible outlet for your daft little comic-based notions in the UK in 2008 doesn't half put a mighty gust in your sails. As a launch pad for us poor neglected British comic artists and writers, it could be a real godsend.

Iron Man and Nelson, will there be stuff in there for little ones? I recently picked up a copy of Super Friends which was pitch perfect for the tiny chap
