Hopeing someone can help me:
A long while back I read a biography about a sweet, bumbling Japanese Buddhist monk who disguises himself as Chinese to make it to Llhasa Tibet to read ancient Buddhist Texts. He has several misadventures, but always makes it out of tight spots, if only barely alive. The biography takes place around 1900, and the Monk's name sounded like "Kawagachi". I think the name of the book mentions "Roof of the World", but I may be confusing it with something else...
Does anyone know the book I'm talking about? I'd love to find it again...

Three Years in Tibet is, I think, the book you are looking for:

This is Ekai Kawaguchi's account of his legendary solo trip, beginning in 1899, through a Tibet long hostile to all outside visitors. Disguised sometimes as a Chinese doctor and at others as a native Tibetan, this Japanese monk managed to traverse practically the entire length of Tibet - largely on foot - a feat of outstanding courage and endurance, as well as good fortune. However, the real value of the account is the author's careful and detailed observations of Tibet, Tibetans and the rule of the 13th Dalai Lama, whom he met a number of times. Kawaguchi was both awed by the Tibetans' religious devotion and knowledge and shocked by some of the cruelty, corruption and sexual licence he saw around him.

Bless You! That's it indeed. It was a great book, and looks like it will be a small chore to find. (On Canada's Amazon, that is...)
Cheers!
