Speed Racer

Anyone looking forward to the movie? I know I am. It looks like the over the top cartoonish action the the Wachowski siblings are known for is in full play in the picture. And I noticed that it looks like the early anime is brought to live action in new ways as well as paying respects to the old anime. Any fans of the show Speed Racer, his big bro Racer X, and the Mach 5? The new trailer has art by Geoff Darrow! Voice your opinions if interested.

Like many fans out there, I am wondering just how the actual story of the upcoming feature film will be, but there is no doubt in my mind that it looks like beautiful, visually inventive, dynamic EYE CANDY. I'm even wondering if the Wachowskis will pioneer some new filmmaking stuff with this movie - if it's 1/5 of the visual dynamism of the first Matrix film, I'll be really happy. I sense they're going to bring some new bags of tricks to the party here...

And heck, it just looks FUN. Good actors, bubble gum day-glo colors, Speed Racer, a real-life Mach 5, Racer X -- where can you go wrong?

What do you mean? I've seen a few trailers and I haven't seen comic book art in any of them .... [goes off to look at trailers again]

Sorry I thought this was the trailer I saw before but I saw a segment of the film that certainly appeared to be Geof Darrow's artwork in my eyes. It was a segment where the Boy Speed racer is watching a cartoon and is transported in the cartoon....

I'm certainly looking forward to it, partly because all I know of Speed Racer is a few vague stylistic scraps, having seen maybe one full episode of the cartoon ten years ago or something. It looks kinetic, which I'm very much in the mood for right now. The Accomplice looked appropriately concerned when I said we were going to be seeing this, but I just responded with, "But it's the Wachowskis! With bright colours instead of black!" I think there may also have been hand-gestures.

Actually, I have the odd impulse to watch Speed Racer back to back with Bound, the first ever Wachowskis film I ever saw. And then write some V/Racer X slash fiction.

Go Speed Racer, Go!

Just saw Speed Racer in Korea opening day and I must admit for a first kiddie movie by the Wachowski Siblings it wasn't that bad. Rated PG and in tone of the cartoon sped up on visual Day Glo CGI effects it dares to go where few new movies are brave enough to go with somewhat over the top action sequences and hyperspeed racing in new dangerous racetracks that sends its vehicles careening to the edge and going upside down in loops. Being an action scene junkie Speed Racer only left me craving for more like the over the top Matrix sequences or scenes like John Woo's Hard Boiled when I saw in the theater for the 1st time left me in adrenline shock!

The script you can see was imagined with direction of new visual feasts already in mind such as the dialogue spoken by characters but no intercuts or editting but rather smooth hyperspeed tracking shots between characters shot and spoken. The Wachowski Siblings use new innovative shots new to expand the vocabulary of cinema, and it only left me wanting more of those new innovative shots but with some thought and meaning behind it.

I especially liked the soundtrack and their use of new mixed with the old cartoon soundtrack amped up for the new generation. The Grand Prix finale with the soundtrack only heightened the drama and I liked it alot. The Wachowski Siblings use of HD shots are pretty new to my eyes and it is pretty shocking when you can see crisp and clean and very detailed shots where the background is just as alive as the foreground where every member of the race track audience can be seen in vivid and clear detail.

Some of my gripes with the movie:

The cartoony action of the Wachowski Siblings fits well with a movie vehicle such as Speed Racer but you feel sometimes that their heroes are too invincible and undefeatable and you are felt numb by not feeling any excitement because the danger they face you know they will easily overcome. Every car accident and bump is fearless and numbingly bizarre at times because you feel no danger at all for the character.

I felt the tone of the film was a bit bizarre because it is a film for kids and it seems that the Wachowski Siblings were a bit fish out of water with the new child like tone especially after seeing something like the Matrix and V for Vendetta where they seem more comfortable with adult oriented themes fused with teen type adrenlinized action. I Sped to the theaters to see this film on the strength of the Matrix and their production of V for Vendetta but after I saw Speed Racer it felt the engine and the vehicle lost track of itself and I felt I was left with a total blow out. Having said that I still look forward to what the Wachowski Siblings have in their arsenal and bag of tricks for future films just on visual invention and innovation.

Just seen it, and I have one strong advise to all: go see this movie on something. In fact, you could actually go to this movie with your mp3 player playing you favorite tripping song and you won't miss much, and migh even gain a little. The Wachowskis may have done for psychodelic-buffs and fast cars aficionados with this movie the same thing they did for anime/kung fu movie-watching geeks with the first Matrix movie. It's that wild/weird

I also want to say I want the toy version of every single car in this movie, specially those in the final race (The Machs 5 and 6 are actually, design-wise, the least interesting cars in the movie)

Best line in the movie: "Crom!" (seriously)

There are actually some endearing family moments here and there, specially in the first moments of the movie, during the first race, when Speed races against the "ghost" of Rex.

Spritle and Chim Chim's comic relief moments and one moment at the beginning of the movie with kid Speed daydreaming might be a fewof the most psychodelic scenes in the history of cinema.

But, trust me on this, you want to see this movie on something.

also, I think all cars in this movie are hybrids. At least I don't recall any mention to fossil fuel.

wondering if going to see this on acid will make the experience better or worse.

Took some LSD before seeing this, and enjoyed myself thoroughly. John Goodman's face was a little disturbing when I wasn't expecting it, though. Visuals were top-notch, and Christina Ricci is apparently only getting younger as the years pass (her haircut in this picture is adorable, by the way). I have little tolerance for comic relief in the style presented here, by which I mean monkeys and children, but I made it through.

saw it yesterday. I fucking loved it. that could be the afteraffects of the IV talking (I don't know where to buy acid but I had just got out of the hospital). some dramatic monologues could (should) have been cut short. some of the crazy experimental visual effects worked better than others. and the wachowski bros. do seem to have trouble switching smoothly between dramatic exposition and (not very) funny comic relief starring that fucking kid and chimp. but I didn't care. I fell in love with this movie about 30 seconds in and stayed pumped the whole time. beautiful dumb fun. and surprisingly, the story really was kind of moving in several places. I predict a huge surge in traffic accidents caused by people leaving this movie, assuming anyone besides me saw it and was old enough to drive.

actually, that's the problem right there - kids will love this movie but have no idea who speed racer is or what any of the draw from the old show is. adults may want to watch speed racer for nostalgia, but will find several sections of the movie to be annoying in theme/tone.

I still loved it and I don't care who knows it. I might actually go back and see this again while it's still in theaters, because it's going to suck on my little computer screen...

Ditto! Loved every second of it. The bad reviews seem to be overly cynical and miss the point so drastically that it boggles the mind. It's a visual spectacle unlike any ever seen, the storytelling is innovative and imaginative, it's GREAT fun for kids big and little, and YES OF COURSE it is simple! Whaddaya want? Apocalypse friggin' Now? If you can handle a light-hearted and good natured adventure with amazing visuals and a basic but nonetheless fun plot, go see it. It's definitely worth watching on the big screen.

I actually thought Chim-Chim was the best part of the whole film.

That being said, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. The monologues could have been cut out entirely, and I would have liked to have seen more of the supposed rivalry between Speed and Racer X.

It could have been the classic Rocky vs. Apollo Creed scenario: Racer X keeps beating Speed, Speed finally beats Racer X, THEN the two join forces.

Instead, we have Racer X and the commissioner guy just showing up at the family's doorstep out of nowhere, and we're supposed to be all "OH SNAP!"
