Klaus Dinger of NEU!, La Dusseldorf, La! NEU and for a while Kraftwerk, died on 21 March 2008.

He was a little bit strange, eccentric, outragous, and a firm believer in white overalls as the clothes of the future.

Here's a video of him in La Dusseldorf and here in NEU!.

Gutted. Klaus was the ultimate proto-punk. A snarling lippy clad true believer with a heart as big as the Rhine and a genius for ultimate catchy melody. One of my favourite moments in Krautrock comes during La Dusseldorf's (massively underrated) second album. Wherein, so overwhelmed is he by the glorious banks of motorik propelled skidding keyboard cloud, he starts yelling utopian doggerel and MEANING EVERY WORD.

"THIS...THIS COULD BE PARADISE
IF WE OPEN OUR HEARTS!
IF WE OPEN OUR MINDS!"

A-fucking-men, soul brother.

Basically, what M'lord Savage said above.

Klaus once insisted on taking me and Lilly Nowhere to tea in his hotel room following the media launch of the remastered NEU! back catalogue. He took us there in his battered old car, at breakneck speed, filming a conversation with us over the back of his seat - while he was driving.

He made a very nice cup of tea.
