Human Fertilisation and Embryology or HFE Bill

Surprised this hasn't been discussed at all already - if it has been and i missed it, sorry for duplicating a thread.

Basically, i am wondering what folks here think of the ethics of creating embryos, both human and human/animal hybrids, for experimentation and subsequent destruction after 14 days?

What are your thoughts on so-called 'saviour siblings', children specifically created for the sake of a transplant?

Other potentially problematic areas are the possible creation of embryos without donor consent, and clauses allowing a name other than the biological father's to occupy the father's space on the birth certificate.

Opponents to the bill also claim that embryonic stem cells have not generated any therapies as of yet, whereas adult stem cells have generated at least 70 therapeutic applications. This has led to accusations of 'emotional blackmail' directed at those scientists and charities urging embryonic stem cell research in the name of curing ills.

Any expertise from either a scientific or legal perspective that can shed light on these issues is welcome on this thread, as is general opinion.

Thanks for starting this one Grim.

On the subject of "savior siblings" I find myself a little conflicted. From an evil science view it is probably one of the more efficient and reliable ways of getting the organs/cells/blood factors that an ailing child would need. But I have a lot of concerns about the, obviously emotionally charged, topic of a seriously sick child over-riding their sibling's right not to have surgery that doesn't directly affect their own health.

Surgery of any kind carries some level of risk with it, and more so with surgery on young children.

Obviously one side of the argument is that "of course the saviour sibling would want to save their sister/brother" but, I dunno. It's a tough one isn't it?
