I was looking for a job...

Rubbish.

Today, I quit my job as editorial dogsbody at a small magazine publisher, on account of my employer's reticence to actually pay me. Am back on the scrounge and still no nearer to escaping the provinces.

So. Was wondering if lithers might know any unexpected/overlooked resources for job apps or info. I use Guardian jobs, journalism.co.uk and my university grads page. Last time around, I didn't find many other sites with any arts/journalism coverage (Monster is, frankly, rubbish). I've interned all over the place and feel that money and timewise, I can't afford to do another right now. It has to be a paying position. The suggestion of an MA also lingers, but i realise I'm right in the middle of a bunch of closing deadlines.

Any hints? Moreso, any London based Lithers know of any unadvertised entry level jobs in the press circle opening up any time soon?

I know this forum is partly titled "Help" but this might be beyond even it's scope. Mick, did you mean to post this here in The Policy? Because I think you'd get a lot more exposure and potential help over in The Convo.

Regardless, sorry to hear about your job woes. Employment trouble is always shit.

Hi Mick, how many internships have you done? Did you collect any email addresses? Email them and ask them if they have any work for you if you did, the publishing/media industry doesn't advertise for any basic positions that are in any way editorial, they give them to the interns who are the most capable and push the most. We don't have anything at my workplace at the moment, if there is anything at all going in the offices of smaller, well known magazines you could try for that and then keep your eye out for editorial work. You could also look around the B2B sector.

That's actually the best time to apply - if you know what you want to do, can pay and have the time to fill in the forms you could do a lot worse than to get some applications in. Postgraduate education is a pretty saturated market, so the ratio of apps : places is unlikely to be anything like what it was when you were applying for your undergrad. Unless you know what course you want to do and it's got a really aggressive ratio of apps : places?

I'd certainly suggest trying for the MA, it can't hurt and it'll keep you focussed and on the ball while you're looking for work. Monster is crap. I've had some luck getting interviews through the jobs page on facebook, but maybe that's just me.
