Just thought people might like to know that there's currently a sale on at the HMV.co.uk website (and, presumably, in-store too) with up to 70% off selected titles.

That sale isn't half bad.

A big knockdown on the two Bleach DVDs released so far.

Satoshi Kon's difficult masterpiece Paprika is on there for a fiver.

All the Ghibli films for six quid each.

Each Platinum Evangelion DVD for six quid and End of Evangelion for not much more.

Seth, you are my sales-twin. I've just ordered Paprika and Princess Mononoke. Not the Bleach deevs, though. Subs for life.

It's a good sale. Free delivery for the time being an' all.

P'faw!

I saw this sale, like, AGES ago.

It's good though.

I just wish all anime could be this cheap - £20 for 3 episodes doesn't work well with my income.

Agreed, especially if you haven't seen the show and it hasn't completed its run. That's taking quite a risk. The episodes are only twenty five minutes long, too! You should be able to get eight per disc, no problem.

I tend to go back and buy the best stuff, regardless of how expensive it is... hence why I recently spent $120 on the six episodes that make up Gunbuster II. Ludicrous price, I know. But the booklets and the extras made it worthwhile for me, especially as it's virtually impossible to hunt down interviews with Yoji Enokido any other way.

Well, the series made it worthwhile too. Extraordinarily well written and my joint favourite ending to any story in any medium, tying with the original Gunbuster.

Moot point here though, as you won't find them in any sale.

Oddly, Bleach is going in the same sale for £11.99 a set (with RRP around £20) - that's twelve eps for the cost of three. Though I suppose a massively sprawling series like Bleach has to pack 'em in if its fans are to even stand a chance of collecting them all.

I've recently (spurred by an interview I read somewhere with a fansubber) sprouted a conscience in regards to purchasing anime. Unlike music/musicians, quality anime output can't be sustained without significant sales - especially in the non-Japanese market.

It makes sense to buy the stuff you love (and download the stuff you want a taster of/just can't get here), but I'd definitely buy more if they didn't take the piss so much with the DVD pricing. Bleh.

And I suppose that means I've just talked myself into a corner and will have to pick up some quality anime while it's at affordable prices.

Shame.

Yeah, I'm going to pick up those Bleach DVDs as soon as I know how much money I have left after all my transactions clear. I want the official copies, even though I suspect the fansubs will be better.

I agree with you about purchasing habits what with the fact that the industry seems to be dying on its arse. It's looking likely that the incomparable Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann won't get its release via ADV, which is a shame because I want the show in the best quality available.
