okay, more words.
the front-most triangle sail is the Jib. the next sail behind that is the Stay sail. together these are Head sails. they're small enough they can be easily raised by one person and light enough that you actually need extra ropes to pull them all the way down.
the Gaff is the smaller beam on top of the squarish sails, which the Halyards are attached to. the Boom is the bigger beam on the bottom of the sails.
the Headsails don't have Gaffs, but the Staysail does have a smaller beam underneath called the Club.
tying off at the dock we have five Lines. the easy names we actually use are 1,2,3,4 and (sometimes) the Midline, but apparently they have cooler names - Bow Breast, Bow Spring, Stern Spring, Stern Breast (moving from front to back).
there are three things to tie ropes onto (Make Fast) on the ship: Pins, Cletes, and fuckIforgotone. bits?
also: we got to look around under the deck, which is a pretty yucky place as it's about to be renovated.
mostly I just feel like less of an idiot and am now qualified as real volunteer crew, so can start going on real sails with passengers.
I'm going to have to learn how to tie a Bowline though. I never figured that out in boy scouts, either. |
