(Mods- feel free to move this to Policy if you'd prefer)

As a long-time Netvibes user I've been offered an upgrade to their 'Ginger' (as opposed to Coriander) package. What's a netvibes? It's one of those Web 2.0 things that was fashionable last year- essentially a customisable page that works a little like the Google/Vista sidebar, allowing you to stream RSS/Atom feeds and use a lot of fun widgets. Now, instead of going through every site you like every few hours to look for new updates you've got a handy-dandy little window amongst a whole screen of handy-dandy little windows that show you what's new in the blogosphere.
You can have your own private page or, if you're a bit more awesome, a 'Universe' that anybody can access.

This is ours

You'll notice that as of today (25 February, 2008) it's looking a little bare except for the old-school Invisibles background. I'm putting a few of the blogs I read regularly in there and will continue to do so. However, I'm only one guy, so there's no way that I can be sole provider of Really-Simply Syndicate info-awesome to the site at large.
The idea is that we use this thread to share the RSS/Atom links to blogs we want to share with the board. I've organized the page into categories corresponding to the different forums on the Barb' (with the notable exceptions of Convo, Policy, Creation and Gathering for hopefully obvious reasons) so if you want to add a blog do so in the following format:

Feministing: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Feministing - Switchboard.

There's also a Barbelith Blogs tab, so if you have your own blog you can show it off there.

At the moment I'm the only person who can edit the page, so if anybody has any design ideas (like 'get rid of that bloody stupid background, it's not nineteen-ninety seven') then post them here or PM me. In time I could probably add some of you as moderators for the page by sharing my login details if it's necessary. Oh, and be aware that I can neither control the content of the blogs nor flag those that might contain NSFW content, though I won't put up any RSS's likely to have naughty content. I will be happy to remove any content that is either offensive or just plain uninteresting to the Barb's community.

Why do this? Well, it's a way of sharing the blogs you like for one, which ultimately means sharing information and opinions that can lead to discussions on the board proper. Anything that goes towards creating and informing discussion on this site has got to be a good thing, right? Also, all Netvibes universes are listed in their 'ecosystem', allowing users to browse them- meaning that potential board members can be enticed in because they share our collective interests rather than the more traditional 'I've read The Invisibles/Illuminatus/Condensed Chaos/Mein Kampf now listen to what I have to say' route.

Finally- this is yours now, so use it- put every blog you visit regularly on there, make any and every suggestion you want to get it runner smoother, and have fun.

Uh, well, I read 43Folders a lot, and write on there very rarely:

43Folders - http://www.43folders.com/rss.xml - Conversation(?)

I also have a music blog. Other people do most of the writing (I quote science articles, then make songs out of them):

The Guild of Scientific Troubadours - http://feeds.feedburner.com/gost - Laboratory (?)

And I can't get enough of Monkey Punch Dinosaur, which is slowing down lately:
Monkey Punch Dinosaur - http://monkeypunchdinosaur.blogspot.com/ - Creation (?)

It's by Adam Ford, who's on here. He sort of has a blog, but it's more of a, well, thing over here. It doesn't have a feed.

Danger Room - http://feeds.wired.com/WiredDangerRoom - Laboratory

and

The Anomalist - http://www.anomalist.com/ - Laboratory (?) It's basically a tumblelog, but hath no feed what I canst discern.

Hmm... it seems that there needs to be a tab for 'Convo' type things- essentially anything that doesn't fit anywhere else. Except that in this context it's not exactly 'conversation' so much as...what? Entertainment? General?

OK, I've read this whole thread and haven't understood a single word. I'll come back when I'm less, well, pissed out of my face.

I'm sure it's very nice, though.

Thanks, Phex. I'll give that a read. I am just not sure what usefulness the application has. How is it more advantageous than say, bookmarking my favourite websites?
