Office Chairs

Started working from home from my kitchen table. Back is starting to kill me from sitting on the normal chairs. Random question but can anyone recommend any good office chairs?

I'm looking for one that is unbelievably comfy and makes me look forward to sitting in it. Looking at stuff like this particularly the Brant Mesh.

Dude, Aeron. They are unfashionable these days, but they work very well.

Had a quick look at Aerons now but they are 500 quid new and 200-300 on ebay. Can't quite stretch to that.

As crazypants as it is many of us with bad backs use exercise balls for active sitting.

They are inexpensive, super comfortable, and chances are no one will ever steal it. It takes about a week to acclimate.

But what if Buk has neighbours over?

"What... what are you doing?"
"I'm working! This is a working ball!"

I kid, of course. I have to say I'm intruiged by the concept of active sitting and in love with The Swopper.

in my last job, i sat on a ball - fantastic. bloody public sector job here won't allow it, though they did do a workplace assessment and gave me a nice comfy wide tall chair made to measure, so i really shouldn't complain.

and if friends popped by in last job, i gave them the wedge to sit on...

I'm not convinced by exercise balls, as it means all your weight is going through the base of your spine. Perhaps they'd be useful now and then for building up strength, but for long stretches I supect most people would slump, doing even more damage. There's a page with similar concerns here
Since being laid up for a month with a bad back a couple of years ago, I've sworn by chairs which allow you to put most of your weight on the back of the chair, with the most pressure being just below your shoulderblades.

The swopper looks kind of neat... has anyone used it for reals?

The Aeron chair is fantastic, but there are some great knock-offs for way less. Probably the most important thing in an office chair you're going to spend your day in is being adjustable - height, tilt, lumbar support, arms. I definitely suggest a mesh back and fabric seat - having a chair that breathes is also a good idea. The Brant mesh chair looks pretty good, although I never trust anything with a head rest (I try to let my neck tell me when it's time to get up and walk away from the computer for a while).
Once you get a chair, read the instructions, or at least go online and get proper ergonomic sitting instructions (my office chair was just a little bit off once, and I ended up with a pinched nerve, hazard of sitting all day in the wrong position for weeks on end). Just because a position is comfortable while you're in it doesn't mean it's good for your back.

i'd second the recommendation of Aeron chairs, they're wonderful. I'm not sure about the assertion of them being unfashionable, I was in Wieden & Kennedy (the Nike ad agency) last month and they're pretty darn common amongst designers. It's pretty classic mid-century design, on par with Eames product.

Aside from that, I really like kneeling chairs. They're apparently not the best for all day sitting (same issues as exercise balls), but for me they can't be beat for a few hours at a time.

I ended up just ordering this one. I'll post a review when I get it.

I'd like an Aeron but we are talking 300-500 quid here. Are they worth it or are you paying for the brand? I just want something comfortable to sit in all day.

I dont really know what you have to pay for a good office chair. Comfy, functional but not designer.

In the US, you can find Aeron knock-offs at most office stores (staples, office depot) for around $250-300, as opposed to 600-700 for the real thing. I'm sure the UK has them in similar stores. Not quite as adjustable (and likely not quite as durable), but possibly a good buy if you're looking for that style on a budget.
