The Online Gamers Anthology

"Do you remember when you first got PK'd leaving Britain in Ultima Online? Or the first time you walked into Befallen in Everquest? Join your host Jonathan as he takes a look back at the experiences and memories of your favorite Online Games from back in the day, and a look at the games that inspired them!" - Jonathan

Virgin Worlds, an MMORPG news website recently became host to a new podcast called 'The Online Gamer's Anthology'. In it Jonathan remembers the good old days of MMORPGs, talks about fond memories and discusses titles with guests (including Brian "Psychochild" Green, game developer and current maintainer of Meridian 59).

The series is great, and Jonathan is a brilliant host. I love the way he's able to describe his memories in such a way that I can get a clear picture of them in my head, even though I've never played quite a few of the titles he's discussed.

All of the episodes are in MP3 format and two episodes will often cover a single game. We aren't particularly far into the series right now, but quite a few of the real classics have already been covered.

My favorite episodes are 4 and 5, which discuss what is arguably the first 3D MMORPG, Meridian 59. Being only 17 years old, I had never played it when it was in its prime, but it's still running, with a decent amount of players. About a week before I first found The Online Gamer's Anthology I had bought a month's subscription to Meridian, so it was really great to be playing for the first time and listening to these great stories and the voice of Psychochild, the guy that's kept Meridian going since the early 2000s.

Anyway, the following is a list of the current episodes, the games they cover and notable guests. The episodes are self contained, so it's fine to listen them in any order, although I recommend listening to the intro episode first to get a better idea of what's going on. I'm terrible at describing things, so this post really doesn't do the series justice. You can get a detailed description of a particular episode by going to its page, so check it out.

Episode guide:
Intro - Introduction to the series
Episode 1 - Everquest P1
Episode 2 - Everquest P2
Episode 3 - Computer Bulletin Board Systems (with Shawn from GuildCast)
Episode 4 - Meridian 59 P1
Episode 5 - Meridian 59 P2 (with Brian "Psychochild" Green)
Episode 6 - Infocom P1: Zork (with Troy from Voyages of Vanguard)
Episode 7 - Infocom P2: Other Infocom games
Episode 8 - Asheron's Call P1 (with Brenden from AnotherHere.com)
Episode 9 - Asheron's Call P2 (with Isanox from "The Eye of Isanox")
Episode 10 - Commodore 64 (Yet to be released)

To close this post, do any of our members have any particularly great memories from older MMOs they'd like to share? Maybe it's about the first time you killed (or got killed) in a game, or the time you finished a really long and difficult quest? I'd like to read about it. I have a few myself, but I've already spent too much time typing this up. :P
