EQ test

I've just scored 75 in this EQ test, which is depressingly low.

Go on, beat me.

116. About average, big whoop. I wouldn't put too much stock in it, jerboas, and people can always improve their EQ. I know about 4-5 years ago I was a total social nitwit. What drew you to that test anyway?

Also, what's it actually measuring? I do put a fair bit of stock in the idea of emotional intelligence, but from a look at the first page of that, it really doesn't seem to be measuring that so much as emotional stability. Perhaps it becomes less so later on, but I'm really not sure why an EQ test should have any questions about your confidence levels.

75. That seems suspicious.

I got 81. I'm never too sure about how much trust to put in these things, but the write-up:

According to your self-report answers, your emotional intelligence is somewhat poor. People who score like you may at times feel that they have trouble dealing with their own emotions and those of others. They sometimes struggle to overcome difficulties in their lives and they are not always able to control their moods. It may be hard for them to understand how best to motivate themselves to overcome obstacles and reach their goals. In addition, they find social interactions difficult at times, for several reasons. They may have trouble allowing themselves to get close with others, finding it difficult to be vulnerable enough to establish intimacy or perhaps lacking understanding of, or comfort with, social interactions. Perhaps by working on your problem areas, you can become more confident in dealing with your own emotions and those of others.

seems about accurate.

I thought so. Surely that's not telling you anything about emotional intelligence, except where it talks about "understanding" - which it only does as one explanation for the results. It's just telling you how ****ed up you are. I'm not sure that that correlates in the slightest.

(My conception of "emotional intelligence" is something along the lines of "insight into the emotions of self and others". Otherwise what does the "intelligence" part mean?)

133. Funny how I'll take a test like this but stubbornly refuse to take an IQ test.

What drew you to that test anyway?

There was a link on an Avoidant Personality disorder website. Unsurprisingly most people on that site had very low scores, which is what you would expect from people with AvPD. So I was wondering how Barbeloids would fare.

I found my score quite shocking. I couldn’t sleep last night and ended up racking my brains about it. I did an EQ test several years ago and had a low score but that was a much shorter test. The one above seems quite wide-ranging. I know I’m a loner and that my social skills are pretty non-existent but I thought I could at least read people’s facial expressions. A lot of the questions (the last third of the test?) seemed pretty straight-forward; I think I know – at least in theory – how to resolve conflict. And I know a bit about psychology because I’ve always been interested in the subject. So I’m surprised that my score is so low. I wonder how the different sections of the test are weighted?

My “Insight into Self” score was just 55. Annoyingly you have to buy the whole report to find out what that means exactly. Does it mean I have no self-awareness? There’s a lot wrong with me but I’m confident that I at least know what my “issues” are.

And what if I really am incapable of reading facial expressions? Maybe that’s why I rarely watch movies and prefer reading books to watching TV? Or maybe I’m over-interpreting the results.

I have to admit I’m relieved that some of you are apparently MADE OF FAIL as well. Join the club!

130, but some of the questions were a bit bland and obvious and i wondered what they were seeking. and the self-description at the end, what was that about? like poetess, i have a disdain for many / most IQ etc tests... did this 'cause you challenged me!

67. I wonder if it's at all likely that a person could move around a lot on the scale, since I seem to find my ability at dealing with my emotions and others varies a great deal from day to day.

Facestab users may have run into this test, which is slightly less mental crisis-inducing* and does at least give you a cute colourful swatch to post on your profile. I want other people to do it just so I can find out what all the other personality types are.

(*Getting only 4% for 'Confidence' was a bit of a bastard, though.)

Did it break down the results? Damn. I want to know what my most awesome quality is.

I know I’m a loner and that my social skills are pretty non-existent but I thought I could at least read people’s facial expressions.

I think you're being far too hard on yourself, jerb. Like others have touched on sites like this are a money-making scheme first and a helpful service second. They're weighted to make you think you might have greivous kinks and flaws in your personality so you fork out. So you might know that you've got stuff to improve on and deal with; at least you know. That's better than a lot of people!

And what if I really am incapable of reading facial expressions?

Incapable is an incredibly strong word to use, dude. Different people are going to have different levels (hardened criminals and buddhist monks, for instance, apparently have incredible facial/body language reading skills compared to the average). I doubt very much that you're incapable.

I wonder if it's at all likely that a person could move around a lot on the scale, since I seem to find my ability at dealing with my emotions and others varies a great deal from day to day.

Indeed, I've had a bit of a shit day today so I wonder if I'd leave a massive crater where my previous score was... If I had any respect for the test I'd say try it a few times to get a wider reading but that way lies madness.

ditto, got dropped.

i did the personal dna one and was only surprised to see how low my femininity was (4%, im a man, my masculinity was 60%, and maybe thats low, which i guess makes sense). i wonder what femininity and masculinity consist of anyway. i would imagine whatever answers people previously gave who identified their gender...

I'm a "reserved thinker", which doesn't surprise me.

Masculinity: 30
Femininity: 10

(I'm a woman. Or at least I was the last time I checked.)

I got 86.

According to your self-report answers, your emotional intelligence is slightly below average. People who score like you do feel that their ability to understand and deal with their own emotions and those of others is just barely acceptable.

Fair enough, but then any site that features ads for celebrities in bikinis alongside personality analysis is probably a little dubious in its methods.
