I am trying to find a good book on how computers work. It should include some computer history and good explanations of hardware and how different components work and work together. Do any of you know about good books on computers?

I think more specifics would help people to offer you advice.

PC or Mac etc, etc...

How they work in what sense? Are you talking about instruction set development in processor architecture? And history going back to Charles Babbage or further? Or are you talking about how to install a home computer and the various HD-DVD/Blu Ray options etc?

I'd recommend a Dummy's Guide, if they have anything that covers hardware. In my experience, they explain things pretty well. As for history, I wouldn't worry about buying a book on it. In my opinion, you should use Wikipedia instead, where you'll find not only generic computer history, but in-depth information on significant historical events and computers, timelines, etc. I'd recommend the 'History of computing hardware' article as a starting point.

First, thank you for the replies. What I was looking for was a book on how computers are put together, how you can put together your own PC etc. I found one (I guess) and its more of a guide with both pictures and text ... weeeei! Ordered it from amazon and waiting for it to arrive.

That looks like a pretty good choice. Hope it does the job for you.
