Dexter in the Dark

Although the TV-series is much better than the novels (IMO), I've read the two first novels and was really looking forward to the third until I read some of the customer reviews on amazon. Usually there are some good and some bad reviews, but "Dexter in the Dark" got mostly bad reviews.

Obviously the author turned away from the question that made Dexter so interesting - "Is what he does good or bad?" - and went over to turning the Dark Passenger into an ancient Demon that possesses the protagonist.

None of the first two novels provide hints about Dexter being possessed by some supernatural being.

This fantasy-like twist makes me not want to buy or read the third novel. Lindsay didn't even bother to come up with a title with three D's in it.

Have any of you guys read it?

I´d heard that it was supposed to be bad. But Dexter being posessed by a demon? It doesn´t make sense at all and it makes the author seem desperate. As is obvious from the TV show, there are so many directions, Dexter´s character can be taken without falling back to such a ludicrous occult idea. Now I know for sure I´ll stay away from the third novel.

Thanks for reading it, Christina, and saving me (and probably a couple more readers) some money and especially time and disappointment.

Oh, I didn't read it, Mist. I just read the amazon customer reviews...so they saved me the money

Oh probably going to be generic spoilers in this post...

I read the first two Dexter books last week and have just finished the third. Now it could just be fatigue from reading all three in a short span but I really did enjoy the first two books a lot more.

It's not just the side-step into fantasy - though there are vague attempts to make it ambiguous - so much as the tone of the book. The first two were, despite the subject matter, fun reads. This less so. Even though the narrative dictatwes that Dexter would be less flippant in this situation it would, perhaps, have worked better if the tone gradually darkened as the threat became obvious.

It could even be that the part I was most interested in - the step-kids - was the sub-plot whilst the main plot was comparatively ordinary.

This third chapter isn't bad, just nowhere near as much fun as I'd have liked.

Oh, and it's not as simple as Dexter being 'possessed' when he commits his crimes, even with the supernatural elements of the story.
