Hello, new chaps. There have been no new members for about three months, and hopefully this will be changing now. However, this is all a bit new. Essentially, Barbelith is not functioning the way it probably ought to, and is likely to stay broked for the foreseeable future. We're all hoping to try to keep it going as best we can.

Anyway, welcome to. We don't traditionally introduce ourselves upon arrival, but if you'd like to, this would be a good place to do it. Have a read of the wiki, and see you around.

They are welcome to say hello here, or not, as they wish. As I say above, and you did not apparently read, introductions are not expected here as they are in some online communities, so it's very much a matter of personal taste.

Now, I know it's nice to be noticed, bacon, but perhaps you could share your genius elsewhere?

OK - a bit more info. You all gave me a password for logging in. However, you can change this at any point if you want to - all you need to do is to get to your profile page, and change the entry in the "password" field. You can also change your screen name (the name that appears on the board, rather than your login name), but only once every 28 days.

From your profile page, you can also get useful information about your standing as a member (when you started, how many posts you've made or threads you've created, suit number) by hitting "update," regardless of whether or not you've made any changes.

Qalyn, your friend has forgotten to take off his jeans before he put on the chaps.

How embarrasing for him.

I once had a discussion that chaps are, by definition, assless (see the term "assless chaps"). However, my friend theorised that perhaps the assless means without the pants.

Less of the "him."

It's a hormonal condition.

I don't like to talk about it.

For your convenience, new folks, a form for you to fill in to make your introductions easier:

"Hello, (guys/ladies/new best friends/gentlepersons/alien life forms/other)! My name is (Grant Morrison/not Grant Morrison/Grant Morrison's Biggest Fan/[insert name of famous historical troll here]/not [insert name of famous historical troll here]). I came to this site because I am interested in (the Invisibles/kaos majyckk/freaking the mundanes/"intellectual discussion" with Haus/"intellectual discussion" about Haus' chaps, assless or otherwise). I am (18/19/14/57/930) years old. I (am/am not) (racist/sexist/classist/homophobic/other), but ([insert ill-considered, prejudiced proclamation here]/[insert ill-considered, prejudiced joke here]). I think (Grant Morrison). Optional: I am mainly here to pimp (insert your mediocre project here)."

(In case any new members actually read this thread: This here's a bit of an inside joke, as is much of this thread, because it's been a regular complaint of Barbelith members that everyone comes here to talk about the Invisibles and the ideas therein, and many of the people who've been here a long time are sort of bored with that. The object of the joke is to laugh about the complaining, not to make the new members feel bad, in case that isn't clear.)

More seriously: Welcome to you! I'm glad you're here. Please join discussions already in progress, post new topics in the forums you think they're best suited for, read old discussions to catch up on the context.

Word of advice: it is indispensable to read old threads. You find things called "inside jokes" in old threads that are actually easter eggs... little bits of code that trigger scripts that make the bots think you're an established member. Basically, by finding and referencing these "inside jokes" (as well as more serious bits of intellectual conversation that have happened regularly on the board before... in fact some would say this is even more crucial than the inside jokes, but that's debatable) those suits that are actually complex scripts (and no, none of us will tell you which ones they are, and if anyone does, they're lying) will respond to you as if you have been here for years, and not target you as a newbie. If you display enough knowledge of board history, the bots might give you access to the "nonexistent fora," including the Armoury and the Amoury, neither of which have any basis in reality. No one's quite settled whether it's a feature or an exploit, but hey, work every advantage you can, right?

Ha ha! Boy I feel silly today. It's raining and dreary out and that's my excuse. Back to seriousness: I'm glad you're here, and probably so is everyone else, even if they're crotchety about it. And DAMN TTS looks hot in those chaps. Even with the jeans.

Zippy! You're not supposed to tell them about the secret forums. Especially not the Armoirey. Especially that.

Now go and post about that delicious 2-door white oak you were teasing us with...

When you click on a username, you will find, at the bottom, an option to add that user to your ignore list for a week. If somebody is really annoying and it seems other people are doing a good enough job of addressing any pertinent issues, it may be preferable to the put the user in question on ignore rather than get upset over it. Like so.

So, I've read the thread, an I believe I'm the most recent member to post, unless of course the lot of you have blended in rather nicely and I haden't noticed.

I'm quite impressed with Barbelith so far, quite mature, sociable and whatnot.

As far as this goes "Essentially, Barbelith is not functioning the way it probably ought to, and is likely to stay broked for the foreseeable future. We're all hoping to try to keep it going as best we can."
I'd be glad to lend my hand however possible. I'm a PHP programmer without a job at the moment, extra time and such. Just direct me to the proper people and I'll hit them up with a private message.

Before a whole lot of people throw themselves off buildings and onto this thread...

Thanks very much for the offer, Breefield. It's appreciated, really. However, Barbelith runs on a proprietary code base, and the code is the work of a couple of people who work in social software and interaction design professionally - theoretically, Barbelith is a showcase for this code. Unfortunately, for one reason and another the code has either broken or been broken in various ways, or needs have been identified that did not fit into the original spec. Unfortunately, for reasons practical and philosophical, the code is not available for fixing, so while we're on this code base we just have to muddle along as best we can. It should not impinge on your enjoyment of the board now you're on it too heavily, but it does mean that if you have a great idea for a functionality add, it won't be likely to be added in a hurry.

I suppose I'm just muddled about weather it's the lack of help/coders, or lack of functioning code to work with.

Has anyone considered a complete port, to a working code base, or platform as you might call it. Barbelith itself seems fairly simple to me and I don't think it would take too long to do this at all. Porting over all the old forum posts is possible too. I'm not sure about the reality of anything happening however, I haven't been around long enough yet. I'm most likely talking into the wind about this though. Things are functioning here, I just think that the features that should/could be added, can be, and should be added. It's really up to everyone though.

It's a road we've been down before I'm afraid, and if something could be done it would be done by now.
Banning functionality is what we need most of all, so the barb' isn't really 'broken' as long as we can avoid being dicks to each other and don't take on any trolls in our sporadic recruitment drives.

"Banning functionality is what we need most of all, so the barb' isn't really 'broken' as long as we can avoid being dicks to each other and don't take on any trolls in our sporadic recruitment drives."

Thanks for this, Phex; really good to liven up my workday with a jolly joke.

And, I might add, as long as new people don't mind being shoehorned into the system whenever Haus has the means, motive, and opportunity, since part of the shortcomings of the code seems to be that the processor responsible for adding new members to the database is entirely consumed with working on higher-level processes in other programs entirely, and rerouting the job to other processors is prevented by the security protocols.

I think we should be more concerned about what Devil Dinosaur would do: take out his seething, unbidden rage upon hapless herbivore dinosaurs.

But his arms are so short he's stuck in a paradox, releasing his rage upon the helpless herbivore dinosaur and then being ridiculed, thus furthering his devilish actions.

That's a classic Robert F. Walters right there, that is.

And welcome, to you and any others lurking around here.

It's a shame to see that interval's project never worked out and the thread more or less died.
I'm considering a similar venture, just don't hold me to it. I have a few things to do, but I expect I'll start on something out of boredom over the weekend.
