the last we see Fred the mannequin is in front of the DVD store. either he put it near the trap and forgot all about it [showing signs of madness] or it was set by Anna or zombire king. since she said she headed to the spot he went to everyday as per the radio transmission, i suppose zombire king set the trap in the end.

Which does suggest that either the vampombies were able to empathise with him enough to predict his curiosity outright, or had been observing his behaviour. Either way, they were far from being the 'animals' he seemed to characterise them as.

I suppose most predators rely on strategy as much as they do on raw ability.

I'm pretty sure the trap mannequin is not Fred.

Hector, I apologise.

and thank you for being so restrained in your response.

The mannequin in the trap near the end IS FRED.

hector:

your reply didn't seem rude to me.

i didn't see freds head move at all, do you? at what timepoint in the excerpt clip?

for arguments sake.....does Robert call ALL the male mannequins Fred? maybe this mannequin just happens to look like fred....from the same initial shop display?

Otherwise it certainly alludes to the fact that the zombievampiremutants have more.....humanity....left in them than Robert states.

Its funny, there is a level of ambiguity that always seems to improve a film for me, evident in most Terry Gilliam films; multiple interpretations etc. However a little too much ambiguity kills the narrative dead. Has this effect ever been studied? or does it exist only im my universe?

Walker, do David Lynch movies cross that threshold?

nopes, i think this is because I always approach his work expecting there to be some uses of dream logic,,,,,etc,. and also his narrative style is....propulsive, kind of like Kerouac, except visually.

Maybe it needs to be a director/story teller I know I can trust. maybe

Well, the original ending has been leaked, and surprise surprise, it's better than the one they used.

It's still not great though.

Several people mention the most recent previous attempt to film I Am Legend (Omega Man with Charlton Heston) but I don't think that anyone so far has mentioned the first time it was made as The Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price as the survivor - here named Robert Morgan I think. For my money that version is better than Omega Man and achieves an atmosphere of genuine creepiness with minimal special effects. That there are some vestiges of humanity in the zombies is quite apparent as one of Morgan's former friends is constantly banging on his door and shouting his name demanding that he comes out.
Unlike Omega Man there are also flashbacks to before the tragedy struck and a very scary scene after Morgan has chosen to bury his wife rather than follow the government's instructions and have her corpse burned.
