Competition to Name a Superhero....

Seriously. Honestly. No, I'm not kidding.

Move over King Billy, there's a new hero in town
Saturday, November 24, 2007
By Victor Gordon
Maybe they'll call him 'Sash Gordon', the new Orange Order superhero who can fly like a bird or a plane - or a flag fluttering in the wind of change on the Twelfth.

His feet won't have to touch the ground - on the Garvaghy Road or anywhere else - as he spreads the Orange message to order.
Our loyal friend, with the cheesy grin, the bright orange body suit, the quiff of orange hair, the purple cape and purple star on his barrel chest, is out to change the image of the order.

The Orange lodge are updating, and have decided to enlist the above chap to do so.
He replaces the more traditional William III:

Does anyone think this will work for them?
Or will it, as the residents of the slam forum reckon, backfire horribly across the web?
(that thread has actually become a comedy goldmine for other reasons now, but lets not get distracted)

But more importantly, what should he be called? Captain Billy? The O-Ranger? Sash-man? Cuchulain?

Apparently 'Orangeman' has been deemed too obvious already...

Here's their site, and you can email your suggestions to them at info@goli.demon.co.uk

Bob.

Bob's good, but I dunno.... where's the oomph? I mean, he's gonna have to march about town, with everybody giving him and all the other orangemen pelters. He'll need to feel special, like a shining example of man.

All your Daves, Steves, Bobs, Barries and even your Craigs just don't feel right.

Maybe, though.

Slam residents so far have suggested, among others, The Boyne Wonder and The Hunisher.
The last one is a wee bit dodgy, especially in my neck of the woods, but they do both feel a bit more... well, oomphy.

Sash Gordon's actually cute enough to work for me. "Tangerine Terror?"

I reckon that could be his alter ego, his Clark Kent. He's unlikely to be painted by his masters as a man with anything to hide, of course, but even Manly Warriors of Loyalism have private lives to protect. I mean, the UFF wear ski masks, don't they?

Yes, definitely an alter ego name.

The first name that came to mind for him was "Captain Sunshine". He just looks so goody goody.

OH! Zestman!

Well?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
02:50 / 28.11.07
I dunno. "Zest" is something I've long associated with a particularly evil portion of a drug trip. Lots of energy but it's not necessarily going in good directions.

Drug trip? How? Gawd Papers, what drugs are you talking about?

I was thinking orange zest.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Oh, E back in the day. Yeah, I got to "orange zest," but the word still has odd connotations for me.

The Falcon

Hun-Man
Derry Boy
The Loyalist
The Unionist

I think he's horrible, btw.

What? No, it's just the whole scheme to introduce kids to a life of bigotry and trumpish parading of said.

Luckily superheroes are about as cool as Bilbao, which is to say not at all. The kids will not be fooled, mostly.

I would call him Mister Meat. He could be a naughty sort of superhero.

Me too. I think he's a hideously designed hero for a hideously antiquated conglomeration of hation. Still, at least he's not actually an effective rebranding ,eh?

Orangey.

If it's good enough for cats when you're four, it's good enough for that fellow up top of the thread.

Alternately, I echo the earlier minor love for Sash Gordon, conceptually, as a name.

I can't believe no one has already thought of...

... Agent Orange

Win.

Yes, it's a kind of caustic, revolting damagey thing, yes. Correct. As I say, win.
