I really loved the ending. It was the ending that I always wanted Miracle Mile (one of my favourite films) to have, but it didn't.
MIRACLE MILE SPOILERS
Miracle Mile THINKS it has a bleak ending, but what would have been bleaker on a personal level (yeah, the end of the world is bleak and all, but it's hard to relate to on a personal level, and we've seen it a million times) would have been for the entire thing NOT to have been real, and for him to have saved the girl of his dreams only for her to realise he was actually wrong about the whole thing, and for his obsession with saving her to have caused HUGE amounts of death and disaster, and for her to hate him for it. As it is, while the world ends, we still get the romantic ending. Which is nice, and don't get me wrong, I love a romantic ending, but in that PARTICULAR movie I think they went for "second bleakest". Given that nobody else in the world is actually important to us as characters in that movie, just as extras.
I liked The Mist, though. Definitely one of the "not shit" King adaptations, which are pretty rare.
Incidentally, The Host Of Seraphim is actually by Dead Can Dance- just because Ms Gerrard does the vocals doesn't mean Mr Fraser shouldn't get a mention. It's like saying How Soon Is Now is by Morrissey. I'm sure Johnny Marr (not to mention Joyce and Rourke) would be a bit fucked off about that. Especially given that Moz didn't do that awesome guitar line.
To be honest, I didn't think the "gateway into another universe" thing was underdeveloped, in fact I think it was a step too far. I like my horror, like God, to be ineffable and beyond my comprehension. The bits where they explain stuff in horror movies are usually, for me, the bit where they stop being scary. |
