Battle Pope

Here´s the first issue for your reading and viewing pleasure. A truly wonderful piece of work, now with color, and available in four trade paperbacks.

The first of the TPBs is the best, as far as I can judge, afterwards the story seems to lull a bit, but the humour is always very enlightening. Absolute tops: The pope in Hell, and God´s comment: "I work in misterious ways, don´t I?"

If anyone considers this offensive, I´d label them as fundamentalists. Lack of humour is a good indicator there.

That's Robert Kirkman's first title I believe.

He went on to write Walking Dead for Image. He's also working on the Marvel Zombie franchise.

Enlightening? Is that really the word? Battle Pope is fairly entertaining for what it is: a sort of no-brainer knockabout good times comic. But the humour is essentially one (1) joke - I'm not knocking it, but if I thought Kirkman intended it to be biting satire of organised religion, I'd probably hate it.

The joke´s mainly about the concept of "holyness", or isn´t it?

The pope sleeping with the virgin mary, and then being challenged to a fist-fight with the creator....

It´s fun, definetly. And I think there´s a message somewhere, too.... "biting satire of organised religion" would go a bit too far, but the satire is there. (J´s tee reading "what would I do?" got me laughing for approximately 15 minutes.)
