I am beating beaten on facebook's scrabble thing. What am I doing wrong, and who here likes scrabble?

Funny thing 1: A foreign friend said that scrabble sounds like a venereal disease.

Funny thing 2: XI. Well, less funny, more really sad.

I'm on it. Not the greatest track record so far. Always try to get words to start or finish on the coloured squares. Get multiple words. But surely you know this?

Well, what you should try doing is changing your game setting to "Challenge," then take on people who have beaten you.

In Challenge games, you can make up words.

What you're doing wrong is playing Scrabble on Facebook in the first place.

A more productive use of your time might involve dropping your trousers in a Michelin starred restaurant, and then going at the dessert, hammer and tongs. There's no way they'd ask to settle the bill after something like that.

So, it's easy, cheap and (arguably) fun - what are you doing sitting at home in front of your computer?

There's a whole world out there!

(Plus, Scrabble's only entertaining, IMVHO, if you score double for swearing.)

I thought in Challenge games they set it so you didn't get any vowels, and that not-Challenge gave you them. So that one was more challenging than the other

But that would make any sense, obv, because that would mean all seven of my games had suddenly become Challenge.

(What they have really become is inactive)

I'm playing scrabble on facebook to reward myself for writing an essay about Frantz Fanon. It's special scrabble.

I enjoy it, although my skillz are rather up-and-down. Occasionally, I find Facestab scrabble's a bit peculiar, as it won't let you use words like "zen," but "qi" is perfectly acceptable.

Yeah, the dictionaries area tad strange. The scrabulous website says they're the same as those used in official tournaments. God knows, I'd be pissed off if I couldn't play "zen", but I could play za..

But they won't let you write 'fuck' on the side of an aeroplane!?!

I wouldn't allow them to get away with that, were I you.

But that wouldn't be very zen of me, now would it?

I don't agree with why "Zen" wouldn't be in the Scrabble dictionary, but I think I know their reason -- "Zen" is strictly speaking either a proper noun (like Methodist) or a foreign word (like wasabi).

Qi is also a non-English word, though, isn't it? I think it's because of the proper noun thing. The dictionary's rather random - "zine" is acceptable as well.

Tips for Facebook Scrabulous (now I wonder if that's a playable word?)

1) In challenge mode, don't assume someone has a massive vocabulary - Google their play and if it doesn't come up, challenge them. (I learned this the hard way and am currently 215 points down).

2) Use an online anagram engine when you despair of your rack. They only come up with real words. Mostly.

3) As in the real game, bright red is triple word score, pink is double word score, dark blue = triple letter and light blue double letter. Use them wisely.

4) Try to get combo words (legitimate two-letter lists are provided if you click the Word icon)

Oh dear. I have wasted my life - or at least, if I haven't yet, I'm certainly going to.
