I'm reading Alastair Campbell's diaries at the moment. Really interesting because it is an insight in to very recent history. They seem to have been edited a fair bit to avoid controversy with the string hint that the full versions will be available in the distant future.
I like the way he talks about all the stupid crap that these powerful figures get up to. Blair worrying about his hair, Yeltsin talking shit, Chirac being aloof and arrogant. All this during key European summits.
As the press person Campbell splits his time between matters of world importance Kosovo, Iraq and stupid crap like the disappearance of the Downing Street car. You can see how much they worry about image but also how it is reasonable for them to do so... because they a photo in the wrong place (think Ming Campbell pointing at a toilet bowl) will steal the headlines rather than actual proper real stuff going on in the world. |
