The Blair Years

I'm reading Alastair Campbell's diaries at the moment. Really interesting because it is an insight in to very recent history. They seem to have been edited a fair bit to avoid controversy with the string hint that the full versions will be available in the distant future.

I like the way he talks about all the stupid crap that these powerful figures get up to. Blair worrying about his hair, Yeltsin talking shit, Chirac being aloof and arrogant. All this during key European summits.

As the press person Campbell splits his time between matters of world importance Kosovo, Iraq and stupid crap like the disappearance of the Downing Street car. You can see how much they worry about image but also how it is reasonable for them to do so... because they a photo in the wrong place (think Ming Campbell pointing at a toilet bowl) will steal the headlines rather than actual proper real stuff going on in the world.

I won't read this book as I think Campbell is scum, I'm also aware that he announced before it was published that he'd edited out stuff with an eye to a unexpurgated volume in a few years time when it can't embarrass Blair and Brown, if only Private Eye had a decent website I'd point to the report they did a few weeks after it was published where they pointed out inconsistencies between the diary entries Campbell claimed were written at the time and events that actually happened weeks or months later.

Yeah, I don't think anyone would ever claim he is a nice guy. Fascinating to read though. I highly recommend it. It goes from really banal stuff to world events and it is amusing to see the reactions to each.
