Crazy Rulers of the World

Found this documentary about government psychic warfare. It's shoddy, irrational, and sensationalist journalism, but it is also by-turns scary and funny and sad. Would make for a wonderful drinking game.

Got this off of boingboing.net for those interested.

P.S.

Sorry if this would be better placed in another thread, but I felt it fit with the temple's area of interest.

BWHAHAHAHA!

Hey Cassanova, that is funny stuff, but don't be surprised if it is moved or you get asked for more content to relate to magick and/or spirituality.

The Temple needs a bulletin board for these kinds of things.

Yeah, sorry if it is the wrong place. But it having watched most of the documentary now it reminded me of two hilarious sketch comedy bits from "Mr. Show" which highlight the exact qualities of bad journalism this doc. represents.

Oddly, enough I find the subject of the Government's superstitious beliefs and magickal practices fascinating, and wish there was a documentary that handle this subject with intelligence, wit, skepticism, knowledge, and rationality.

I believe I once caught a segment of "the daily show" where an author (of more respectable credentials) was discussing a book about the same subject matter. Anyone know that book's title or the author's name?

here are the mister show bits, watch and you should understand immediately ("But he is early...and so he waits"):

Could there be potential in this thread becoming a bulletin board for links to temple-related documentaries/clips?

As long as there was a synopsis for each link it could potentially be a useful place for flagging relevent things of interest.

I can also imagine the occasional response of 'yes it was worthwhile', or 'it was funny but...' or whatever as being helpful for others wondering whether or not the piece in question would be accurate/informative/just a laugh.

Otherwise this isn't particularly Temple-worthy as a thread (unless the Doc. sparks interesting discussion) and would possibly be better suited to Convo.

What say you?

Won't know unless you try...

LSD - the beyond within is a nice bit of youtube, with part three rather interesting in terms of a British MP and T.V presenter on mescaline as an experiment for the BBC in 1955.

After the Pynchon-esque scenario of the CIA guy at the beggining talking his stuff to the camera, and the "he never DID went through the wall" with that comical tone of sadness you'd see in a Christopher Guest film, I've decided I'll be watching it entirely tomorrow, with popcorn and everything.

intelligence, wit, skepticism, knowledge, and rationality

funny, i associate all those qualities with jon ronson's work. i've not seen that doc since it was broadcast, but i don't remember it being as bad as all that. he's reasonably well-versed in conspiracy culture and parapolitics, and the book that the doc was based on '(them' i believe) i remember as being a very capable bit of journalism. in it he describes getting as lose as you can to a bilderberg meeting, and his 'infiltration' of bohemian grove was quite a big deal in the conspiracy subcult. the follow-up 'the men who stare at goats' is good too, making a convincing narrative linking the us military's post-vietnam nervous breakdown, and demonstrating through several strange mutations and initiatives how it wound up reasserting its sense of control in abu ghraib.

i think often he's not sceptical enough, stopping before he steps too far out of the comfortable realms of acceptable discourse in the british media, where his interests mark him out as something of a fringe figure, but on the whole i think he's wise about these things more often than he is wrong.

he is the least attractive man that my wife has a crush on.

Absolutely. Intelligence, wit, etc, blah are hardly lacking in Ronson's work.

and the book that the doc was based on '(them' i believe)

'Them' was the book tied with his previous doc, Secret Rulers of the World, wasn't it? The one with The Bilderberg Group, Bohemian Grove and all that?

I never saw this series or read the book, but I think the book was called "Men who stare at goats" while the series was "Crazy Rulers...".

Christ, that sounds more confusing than it oughta....

"Secret Rulers of the World" = "Them"
"Crazy Rulers of the World" = "The Men Who Stare At Goats"

...I think.

I love Ronson though. I always get the impression that though he often comes off as the slowest, he's generally the sharpest person in the room by a fucking mile.

Oh, totally. That's how it works. He's a really smart guy. And a lot of his subjects don't really want to talk to a smart guy. But they're more than willing to spill their guts in patronising what they see as a stupid one.
